I have always used a Barbarian as my "fall back" character. In a campaign if I didn't know what kind of character i wanted to play I just made a barbarian. I wanted to see what kind of input I could get on variations of the Barbarian class....

Unearthed Arcana has a bunch of slightly-variant barbarians. Mostly they lose a couple of the juicy abilities (trap sense, uncanny dodge) and pick up an extra feat or two. I don't know of any variations that lose the Rage ability, though I'd like to get my hands on one.

Again UA/SRD. They pick up the Ranger archery feats + favored enemy

Well, the PHBII trades traditional rage for a last stand boost kind of effect. not sure if thats far enough from rage then what your looking for.

I hear ya blackjack...The barbarian should have more to offer a campaign than raging in battle..The variations in Unearthed really didnt interest me.

The Barbarian is made to be a Tank - an angry Raging Tank!!
If you want a Varient - try adding a Bloodline to your character. If the DM would allow it.
The class would be the same but maybe a few extra skill points or abilities from a minor bloodline would help hold your interest.

The Barbarian Hunter variant from Unearthed Arcana loses rage, but gets favored enemy and archery style as per the ranger.

Edit: I see somebody beat me to the above.

By using the hunter variant as a starting point one can begin creating interesting barbarian cultures for a campaign
1. Replaced favored enemy with favored environment (unearthed arcana)
2. Replace archery with another style such as two weapon fighting, mounted combat, or mounted archery.
