Why are barbarians so good at avoiding traps? Why are they the equal of the rogue with this ability?

i have no idea. in fact, i've removed the trap sense ability from them in my campaign, and replaced it with select abilities from the diablo II books.

Something I've never quite understood either.
Certainly nothing about a barbarian seems to point to them being trained or something to be more expertly able to handle traps than other classes.
But then again, when I think of traps, I think "dungeon setting."
They could have that sense because barbarians have to be able to make/deal with/handle traps in thier more "normal setting" (such as the wilderness of the silver marches in Faerun) in order to catch food and such (in other words, part of their 'survival' check to catch food, among other things.
But that's just speculation.

It relates to uncanndy dodge, If you don't know that they used to be the same ability in 3.0 then its understandable.

Trap sense is a part of that feat and their ability to avoid and notice damage or attacks when they'd otherwise be flat footed.

You do know Rogues get the same benefit too?

Yeah, but there are lots of PrCs that get uncanny dodge and don't get the trap sense. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Bbns to have it. I vote that it's just a 3.0 artifact.

It's the whole "I have a kind of sixth sense that allows me to avoid what others would fall right into" thingy. Technically, this should include traps.

I don't know how many of you have access to Unearthed Arcana, but it has some rules on variant barbarians, namely, the ones who have different totem animals.

The different totems give the barbarians different class abilities and extras to make the class better emulate its specific creature.

The jaguar (the default totem animal) seems worthy of trap sense, a creature that uses foresight and wisdom throughout its life (sorry, I watch a lot of Animal Planet). Almost none of the other totem animals get trap sense, besides the lion totem, and even that loses uncanny dodge (as do most of the others).
