Bard Alteration - A Quick and Dirty Fix [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-28-07, 06:48 PM For our games, we're thinking about adding the following ability to bardic music at 1st level.

Spell Song (Sp)
A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to power his spellcasting. As a swift action, a bard can regain a spent spell slot by spending a number of daily uses of bardic music per level of the spell slot he wishes to regain. In addition, he can spend one daily use of bardic music to regain three spent 0-level spell slots. A bard may use spell song as many times as he wishes, so long as he has daily attempts of bardic music left to expend.

For example, a third level bard could spend one daily use of bardic music to regain a spent 1st-level spell slot, allowing him to cast an additional 1st-level spell. Spell Song is a spell-like ability.

While this does significantly increase the spellcasting power of the bard, we feel it will make them a bit more playable outside of social situations, letting them turn excess bardic music into spellcasting power.

You see any problems with this?

06-28-07, 06:54 PM There is a feat from complete adventurer that does essentially what you described. You could just give this feat to bards at level X and it might be simpler than making a new mechanic for it.

Ah, Lyric Spell. Only problem is that this is actually a little bit better than Lyric Spell. Though I take your point. I could just give them Lyric Spell at level 1.

06-28-07, 08:48 PM At the same time, there is a feat in Complete Champion that does pretty much the same thing for Clerics/Dread Necromancers/etc, except that it's with turning/rebuking attempts rather then Bardic Music. Except that it takes 1 + the spell's level in turns/rebukes.

Just an interesting fun fact.

Love Retrieve Spell. My Cleric of Pelor has that feat.
