there is a feat on complete arcane for getting one, I dont know requirements.

the additional good way it is to take a wizard level (better than sorcerer one), this level will grant you inscribe spell feat and access to every wizard level 1 spells, if you take later an item creation feat, you will be able to craft a lot more of stuff thanks to being able to use wizard 1 spells.

---------------

by last, you should considere better using the leadership feat to atract a magical beast by example, cohorts are usually 100 times more useful than familiars because you can improve him... by example at level 8 you can recruit a memphit (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/mephit.htm#airMephit) and later give him levels on fighter, ranger or sorcerer by example.

other funny options are blink dogs (6 ECL), a chimera (11 ECL) a wyrmling white dragon (5 ECL) a Griffon (10 ECL) a manticore, a worg or a displacer beast.

aah, and the pixy, 5ECL (being able to select a class instead a racial hit dice).

Arcane caster level 3rd; knowledge (arcana) 4 ranks.
