If classes had polar opposites, what would the Bard's opposite be?

well I'm not saying this is entirely accurate...but the bard has is a strong all-around class, a jack-of-all trades/master of none type...

So i'd say the opposite would have to be singularly focused on doing one thing and one thing only...I'd go with....Monk. if you thought i was gonna say fighter..no, because all those feats allow too much flexibility...ranged combat, melee, mounted...shields, two-weapon, two-handed....

I vote the Rogue, because both classes can play very similar roles in a party, but the Rogue's tactics generally rely on silence, while the Bard's rely on sound.

My vote is for the hexblade. The bard is the buffer, hexblade is the debuffer

My vote would go for barbarian.

Where the bard is eloquent, upstanding, well rounded, and artful, the barbarian is loud, uncouth, illiterate if he doesnt spend the skill points, and, well, not artful.

A bard is vivacious and an extro-vert. He gets his power by getting people to think about him and his effect on others. He might focus on enlightening others, but it's not necessary.

A monk is focused on internal truths, and personal contemplation. A monk can be silent, a bard cannot.

I'd say Psychic Warriors. Bards use their buffs to help their allies. Psychic Warriors are also a heavily buff-focused class, but their buffs are selfish. Pretty much all of the Psychic Warrior's buffs can only be used on himself. Similar hit dice (d8 and d6), both have medium BAB. One's skillful, the other isn't.

Or maybe Warlock. Same HD, BAB, and ability UMD as a class skill, along with buffing abilities, but the Warlock's buffs can only effect himself.

Warmage. they are good at one thing; blasting stuff. Unlike the bard they make no effort to charm foes or decive opponents, they just blast and blast and blast.

just for fun I will share my oppionion on some others.

1) monk= barbarian: the monk is focused lawful and draws his many unusual skills from abstract teachings, the barb is wild, and mainly uses an ability (rage) that prettymuch anyone can understand.

2)pally=black gaurd: this one is pretty clear.

well the blackguard is not a base class, So that might not count.

Id say for a bard=monk. The alignment requirements the way they go about their duties is nothing alike.

why not paladin, then? bards don't like restrictions, and paladins have a lot of them.
But I still stand by kobold sorcerer.

The one that can do nothing.

The opposite of bard is bard?

<just kidding>

Actually, I'll go with monk. If it helps, bards cannot be lawful; monks have to be.

Barbarian is a good opposite for wizard.

IMO Bards opposite = Fighter/Sorceror/Rogue

Elan and Nale from Order of the Stick.

Its got to be a paladin; only they could posses the sheer lawful strictness and religious conviction to truly opose the chaotic and free wandering nature of the classic bard.

I mean, is the opposite of a man who does nothing but sit around eat the opposite of the man who does nothing but sit around and starve? No, they are both men and both do nothing but sit around and perform one action. That's like the Blackguard and Paladin, which is why I can't support the Bard's opposite as being anything other than......(wait for it)....... Monk.

The funny thing about opposites is that two opposites tend to share much more in common than one would think. Big and small for example, are both measurements of size. Hot and cold, both a measure of temperature. Not like say, hot and door, which have nothing to do with each other. For something to be the opposite of something else, they must both share a similarity to some extent. Even "polar opposites," such as... the north and south pole. Both centers of magnetic activity.

That's how I'd see it any way. Opposite to me means two sides of the same coin. Seems to me the opposite of a guy who buffs everyone would either be a guy who buffs only himself or one that debuffs his foes.

I just don't really see how Bard and Monk are that opposite I guess. To me its like saying the Druid and the Ninja are opposites, even though they share nothing in common, and for something to really be an opposite of something else there must be something that links them together.

ah but if we go truly into opposite fetures then we have to say that no classes realy have an opposite, because they all exist (hence their opposite by definition can not.)

For my purposes, I have to agree with the Hexblade, but I can see how others would think Monk/Paladin or even Barbarian.

I think the major issue would be there are so many different types of bards, most being Chaotic of course, so is Chaotic the opposite of Chaotic? I suppose it could be. Then again, is Lawful Evil the opposite of Chaotic Good? Is bearded Spock the opposite of Mr. Spock?

what?

if something is truly an opposit it is different in every way. That means if something is up, its opposit is down, if something is strong its opposit is week, and if one exists the other can NOT.

Another possibility is the warlock. The bard is all about buffing others. His abilities improve others. The warlock is all about buffing himself. His abilities only improve himself.
