If you are playing with the Spell Compendium as a resource I would recommend taking Improvisation. It was changed to a 1st level bard spell and is good for attack rolls, skill & ability checks. It's somewhat useful at low levels, but really shines when you get higher in level.

If you are really starting out (1st lvl), perhaps taking an incapacitating spell like Hideous Laughter or you can take Inspirational Boost from Spell Compendium that gives an additional +1 to your morale bonus when doing your Inspire Courage ability.

If the skill you chose as your perform check requires an instrument, summon instrument is usually a good one.

Actually cure spells arent a great idea, for a bard with such a limited spell list, they have a easier time by using a wand of cure light wounds.

For core spells advice check my guide in my sig.

In few words, the must have spell for a bard I would say grease, glitterdust and haste. If you focus in enchantments, hideous laughter also is very powerful and better that ever hold person. For defensive spells the four best defensive spells in the bard list are alterself into something with high natural AC, displacement, blink and improved invisibility. If you go no core, take a look into greater mirror image, being able to cast it as an inmediate action is priceless.
