Hello all,

I'm new to the forums, so I apologize if this question would be better placed in another section, or has been answered before. But it seemed like a class question so here it is.

If a barbarian/bard raged, could she use inspire courage while raging?

It is somewhat ambiguous in the book, since you can't use Charisma based skills while raging, and inspire courage need three ranks of Perform to use. But you don't actually make a skill check, so are you actually using Perform to do so?

Thanks,

Technically no

In order to inspire, you have to sing or do something to make the effect work. The rage is more about 'Grog SMASH!' and that doesn't exactly inspire. ;)

Likewise, since you need ranks in a charisma based skill to use the effect, it could be assumed it is a charisma based power.

but I could be wrong!

While raging, a barbarian cannot use... any abilities that require patience or concentration

Most bardic music effects require concentration to use. Since the rage text specifies that you cannot use abilities that require concentration, inspire courage is out.

However, as a house rule, I allow characters with the Savage Bard class from Unearthed Arcana to use their bardic music abilities while raging.

I'm sorry to say but you are wrong. Inspire courage doesn't require concentration.

Inspire Courage is one of the songs you could use while Raging. Anything that takes a standard action to maintain each round is out, as if anything that actually requires a Perform check, like Countersong, Inspire Competence, Fascinate, Suggestion, and Song of Freedom.

Drums. Or adamantine cymbals.

Or you could always roar/growl to the tune of some inspirational song or something....
