Bard/Warrior/Inquisitor? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've an interesting (well, to me anyway) concept that is basically a combination of warrior and bard. However, it's awefully hard to flesh out. At the moment I have full base attack bonus, d6 for HD, high will save, 4 + int skills (skill list like a cut-down bard's), and at the moment three class abilities (contacts: identical to bardic knowledge; linguist: increases languages known at 1st level; smooth talker: scaling bonus (+1 per three levels of the class) to bluff, diplomacy, gather information, and sense motive). It has very bard-like spellcasting (6 spell levels, fewer spells known and spell slots per day than a bard, Charisma-based) with ONLY stealth/manipulation spells, nothing overt.

Here's the problem. I don't even know what to name it. In my mind I imagine a sort of "the king's below-the-radar inquisitor", who is trained in combat and spell manipulation to better protect his lord from the shadows. I see potential in this as more than a prestige class, but until I can figure out a name (and other class abilities, though he'll only need a few) I can't flesh out the full flavor and class itself.

Here's what I have so far: (be-warned, the blanks are the name of the class, putting name just seemed odd to me).

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the martial artist.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: ________s are proficient with all simple and martial weapons and with light armor and no shields. Because the somatic requirements of a _________ spells are so efficiently simple, a ___________ can cast _________ spells while in light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. However, like any other arcane spellcaster, a _________ wearing medium or heavy armor or using a shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component (most do). A multiclass sorcerer still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

Spells: A __________ can cast arcane spells (same type of spells available to wizards and sorcerers), which are drawn from the __________ spell list (see below). He can cast any spell he knows without preparing it ahead of time, the way a wizard or cleric must (see below).

To learn or cast a spell, a __________ must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell level (Cha 10 for 0-level spells, Cha 11 for 1st-level spells, and so forth. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a __________’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the _________’s charisma modifier.

Like other spellcasters, a ___________ can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given in the tables above. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Charisma score. When the table above indicates that a __________ gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level (for instance, 1st-level spells of a 2nd-level __________), he gains only the bonus spells he would be entitled to based on his Charisma score for that level.

A __________’s selection of spells is extremely limited. A __________ beings play knowing four 0-level spells (also called cantrips) of your choice. At most new ________ levels, he gains one or more new spells as indicated in the above tables. (Unlike spells per day, the number of spells a ___________ knows is not affected by his Charisma score; the numbers in the Spells Known table above are fixed.)

As noted above, a bard need not prepare his spells in advance. He can cast any spell he knows at any time, assuming he has not used up his allotment of spells per day for the spell’s level. For example, at 1st level, Rayak the __________ can cast two 0-level spells per day for being 1st level. However, he knows three 0-level spells: (spell), (spell), and (spell). Thus, on any given day he can cast some combination of those three spells a total of two times. He does not have to decide ahead of time which spells he’ll cast.

Contacts: A _________ knows how to maintain a tight-nit network of contacts, all of whom rely on one another to keep well-informed about worldly events. He may make a special contacts check with a bonus equal to his __________ level + his Intelligence modifier to see whether or not he knows some relevant information about local notable people, legendary items, or noteworthy places. (If the ________ has 5 or more ranks in Knowledge (history), he gains a +2 bonus on this check.)

A successful contacts check will not reveal the powers of a magic item but may give a hint as to its general function. A ____________may not take 10 or take 20 on this check; this sort of knowledge is essentially random. The DM can determine the Difficulty check by referring to the table under the Bardic Knowledge description on page 28 of the Player’s Handbook.
