I was wondering when the effect of bardic music comes into play.

Does it happen the moment the bard starts singing or does it begin at the start of the bards next initiative?

Edit: Oh and I would appreciate any kind of references to pages in books or or other official sources.

Hello,

I'm aslo wondering about Bardic music as well, I just started playing a bard for the first time but the PHB (v.3.5) doesn' thave much information there's only about 4 songs in there. I'm just wondering if there's a Bard's compendium or Bard's Book of songs available for purchase? or any type of reference anyone would be able to provide :D

Thanks everyone,

Starting a bardic music effect is a standard action. So its effects begins the same round you start.

Hey. There are different songs in different books. I know that there are Bardic Music Feats in Races of Stone and Complete Adventurer. I think there is also a feat in one of the new accesories that allows for Bardic Song to come as a free action, but i am not completely sure of that. I do know that there is a Feat you can take that will have Bard Song be more effective. I also think that there are new songs, but i can't find them right now. Basically, there aren't very many Core songs, but they are very useful. The accessories do provide many more bardic music feats, and i think somewhere there are more bardic songs, bt i can't find them, so i am not completely positive.

I have also searched for new Bardic Music abilities (songs), not just feats changing/improving songs, and haven't found much, if any at all.

So, I am also interested if anyone can list such supplements.

Races of Stone has a bunch of Bard specific feats including Inspire Spellpower. The feat gives you access to a new bard song called: Inspire Spellpower that grants all allies (but not the bard) +1 spell caster level for the durration.

Complete Adventurer also has a bunch of bard specific feats including the 3.5 updates of Lingering song, disguise spell, green ear, extra music, and subsonics. There are 3 new feats that grant you abilities when you spend a daily use of bardic music, but they are not acutualy bard songs, and a new feat that allows you to freely multiclass as a bard/paladin. The book also has a nice selection of new bard spells, and the 3.5 update of the virtuoso PRC.

Libra Mortis has the 3.5 update for Requiem and the PRC Dirge Singer.

I don't really know of anything else. I have never seen a new basic song printed in a book, only Inspire Spellpower, and PRC songs.

Complete Arcane has 2 bard PRCs: Seeker of the song and Sublime Chord.
Complete Warrior has 1 bard PRC: Warchanter
Dragonomicon has 1 bard PRC: Dragonsong Lyrist

Each of the PRCs grant the bard new bard songs, but the only way to get those songs RAW is to take the PRCs

Hm. You know, this used to be more clear in 3.0 actually that bardic music effects only start the next round; in fact that's why the Rapid Inspiration (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/epic/feats/RAPID_INSPIRATION.html) Epic feat existed. Now it's not so clear; since it doesn't say otherwise I'd be inclined to just say it works as soon as you've taken the action.

I would say "Starting a bardic music effect is a standard action", is relitively clear. The effect goes off as soon as your action ends. To me this makes bards playable, in 3.0 it was: "I start singing to inspire courage" and befor my next action happens I'm pelted with amaging spells, arrows, and silece rocks so that the inspiration never goes off.

Remember the Epic Level handbook is a 3.0 book. Alot of the feats in it no longer function properly.
