*sigh* I've got a troublesome player making life hard for me.

To quote from the PH: "Some bardic abilities require concentration, which means the bard must take a standard action each round to maintain that ability."

But exactly which abilities require concentration? And, more importantly, where does it specify? I'll need to be able to point out the exact quote to convince my player(s) that I'm not just "making it up"--you would not believe how many times they've asked me that in the last two game sessions (especially whenever I'm trying to explain Attacks of Opportunity to them AGAIN).

Sometimes, being a DM is like testing your reaction speed by putting your favourite body part into a meat grinder and then trying to pull it back out again before your players can hit the ON switch.

*sniffle* Oh no, I promised myself I wouldn't cry.... :weep:

dont worry, it is easy to tell because the only ones that require concentration are noted in their description (fascinate and inspire competence )

let me show it:
(bolded the important part)

Fascinate (Sp): A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to cause one or more creatures to become fascinated with him. Each creature to be fascinated must be within 90 feet, able to see and hear the bard, and able to pay attention to him. The bard must also be able to see the creature. The distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents the ability from working. For every three levels a bard attains beyond 1st, he can target one additional creature with a single use of this ability.
To use the ability, a bard makes a Perform check. His check result is the DC for each affected creature’s Will save against the effect. If a creature’s saving throw succeeds, the bard cannot attempt to fascinate that creature again for 24 hours. If its saving throw fails, the creature sits quietly and listens to the song, taking no other actions, for as long as the bard continues to play and concentrate (up to a maximum of 1 round per bard level).

Inspire Competence (Su): A bard of 3rd level or higher with 6 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to help an ally succeed at a task. The ally must be within 30 feet and able to see and hear the bard. The bard must also be able to see the ally.
The ally gets a +2 competence bonus on skill checks with a particular skill as long as he or she continues to hear the bard’s music. Certain uses of this ability are infeasible. The effect lasts as long as the bard concentrates, up to a maximum of 2 minutes. A bard can’t inspire competence in himself. Inspire competence is a mind-affecting ability.

The other musics lacks of needing concentration.

Thanks! I thought Inspire Courage required concentration too--can't remember who told me that, though.

My player threw his musical instrument away today so I couldn't "force him to play it" when he tried to Inspire Courage. ("Because then my hands are free and I can kill things while I sing!") And then it turned out he never used any bardic abilities this session anyway.

And now I have to tell him he was right. *sigh* He's gonna be so hard to sit beside next week. :(

don't worry overmuch about him ditching the instrument, if that means he's entering melee. your bard troubles could end very quickly that way. also, remember, you're the DM. you make trouble for your players, not the other way around, unless they're primary spellcasters.

They all chose Chaotic Neutral for their characters' alignments.

And now they're trying to mine for plutonium. Did I mention that earlier? No, of course I didn't, I'm babbling again.

They rescued some miners from some goblins, and now they're demanding plutonium in payment. Oh, and a lead box. Yeah, right, they're gonna get plutonium in a D&D game....

And every time I tell Bob to make a Spot check, he looks at me like I'm speaking Greek and asks, "What the hell does that mean?" Every. Stinkin'. TIME!

And Todd didn't show up to play because his wife wouldn't let him leave the house--she thought it might snow. (It didn't.) So the other guys elected to play his Wizard for him. I had to stop them from using him to "disarm" the traps. Er, and "keeping the wolves busy just for a minute." They did make him carry all the rope, though--but I told them he dropped it when he ran away from the goblin barbarians. Ha ha ha ha ha! Victory is mine!

CN always sounded like he had a case of the peer pressure. He will act good if another is motivating and vice versa.

What use is the Plutonuim? Oh and without the lead box do a Fort save Dc 15 or Shaken for a hour or so after being far away from it. (making up something lol)

You don't have to beat up players to teach them a lesson lol
But anyway, good luck. Try to give a run down on all the skills before next session.

They think it means, "I'm free to do whatever I want, and kill prisoners."

What use is the Plutonuim?
They're probably thinking, "Nuclear weapons will make us powerful! Powerful, like North Korea! Mwah ha ha ha ha!"

Plus they like to push the boundaries of the game whenever and wherever they can. Oh, and they like to tell me to look it up in the book "to make sure it isn't in there." :ahem:

Pffft. "Plutonium." I refused to even pretend to look that one up.

(Wait. There are no rules for plutonium, right? :twitch: )

Try to give a run down on all the skills before next session.
I tried, but they won't listen. They just say, "Explain it to us when it's important." And when I try to explain it to them when it's important, they accuse me of making it up on the spur of the moment.

Ai! :banghead:

ummm, but unless they have epic ranks in knowledge (physics) they will be unnable to know how to build something with it...

ever a knowledge (nature) check would be required for knowing about plutonium because not everybody in a medieval setting knows about all the elements. (specially because most think that there is only four).

--------

about the singing vs playing an instrument, well song and silence or complete adventurer include special qualities for masterwork instruments, like than with a lute a bard can use two songs at once and such, importing them will balance the sing against using an instrument.

Who's to say that a nuclear bomb will even work?
Maybe the world is made up of only four elements and there is no such thing as plutonium.
But if it were me, I'd let them have it or something similar to it and kill them with radiation poisoning.

Hey, wait a minute. The rules say:
"Even while using bardic music that does'nt require concentration, a bard CANNOT CAST SPELLS,ACTIVATE MAGIC ITEMS BY SPELL COMPLETION,OR ACTIVATE A MAGIC ITEM BY MAGIC WORD"

Still, a bard can do all this while, for example,Inspire Courage is in effect(after the bard stoped singing-5 rounds of effect)?

I know, I know. My players refuse to consider the difference between player knowledge and character knowledge.

...song and silence or complete adventurer....
Excellent! I've already disqualified using Song & Silence because I want to switch to the Complete books as soon as I buy them. Unfortunately, so far all I've purchased is the Complete Divine.

Who's to say that a nuclear bomb will even work?
The DM, of course. :D That's me! I'm gonna mess them up for trying to mess me up....

Maybe the world is made up of only four elements and there is no such thing as plutonium.
Exactly.

But if it were me, I'd let them have it or something similar to it and kill them with radiation poisoning.
Oh, I'll give 'em something they'll call "plutonium" alright. What it really is, I haven't decided yet. But it'll be fun watching them scramble to keep from irradiating themselves.

Maybe I'll have it cause a disease. Which of the standard DMG diseases is closest in similarity to radiation poisoning? (Ooh! Maybe I can call the "plutonium" fiendish clay or something! :plotting:  )

Yes. That's because using bardic music and speaking both require making sounds, so you can't do both at the same time or they will interfere with each other. In a similar vein, you can't play concert cello while talking on your cell phone. (Not very well, at least. ;) )

Still, a bard can do all this while, for example,Inspire Courage is in effect(after the bard stoped singing-5 rounds of effect)?
Yes. Once the bard stops inspiring courage, he can do whatever he wants with his hands/voice/etc. The effects of inspiring courage linger on for 5 rounds regardless.

Just as an alternative to the above options for screwing the players with plutonium how about having a slightly deaf goblin give them polonium instead. It's an alpha emitter instead of a beta (less damaging outside the body, more damaging inside, so make sure you give it in dust form) and is highly toxic (maximum safe amount in the body is seven picograms i.e 7x10^-12 grams or 0.000000000007 grams

But I know even less about polonium than I do about plutonium! Can't I just give 'em demon fever instead? ;)

Here's another question: Suppose a bard starts inspiring courage--taking a standard action to start it going--and uses Perform/Sing so his hands are free, allowing him to wade into combat. He can then continue to inspire courage without concentrating, right? But what if he gets hit in combat, will that interrupt his song? Or will it just require a Concentration check for him to continue?

The PHB is silent on this issue (pun intended). I think it is reasonable to have a check made after damage is dealt. (Envision: Bard gets hit, and needs to catch his breath.) But, it should not be a Concentration check. Everything about the Bard is "Performance" based. It should be a Performance check. I would imagine it would be similar to a Concentration check for other spell casters. That is, DC 10 + damage. This is our house rule.

========================

Similarly, theoretically, the Bard can Inspire Courage for eight hours (or more) straight, even singing while taking a leak! <<grin>>

If I were to rewrite the Bardic Song section, I would require a Performance Check every ten minutes DC = 10 + (time performing/10).

For example, at first level, the Bard would have 4 skill points in Perform (X), assume a 3 bonus from ability. The minimum the Bard could roll is 8 and the maximum is 27. Thus, this first level Bard would have a 15 percent chance of not continuing after the first ten minutes, and the chance would increase to 100 percent after 170 minutes (nearly three hours!).

Another example: My sixth level bard, Perform (Song) = 9 (skill ranks) + 4 (ability bonus) = 13. Minimum roll = 14, maximum = 33. Thus, I can sing for an absolute minimum of 50 minutes. At 50 minutes there is a five percent chance to autostop, and that becomes 100 percent at 240 minutes (four hours!)

Biggest example: 20th level bard, Perform (song) = 17 (skill ranks) + 6 (ability bonus) + 3 (miscellaneous magic item bonus) = 26. Minimum roll = 27, maximum = 46. Minimum song length = three hours, maximum = SIX hours and ten minutes.

Just imagine: Singing for three hours straight!!!! That IS heroic!.

That sounds reasonable to me, but I'm sure my players will argue about it. "Where's this rule?" they'll be yelling while I beat them with the Silence Stick....

The Silence Stick doesn't work anymore. :surrender

Final entry

Entire party killed by a goblin. The bard died singing. He was the third to fall. The dwarven fighter went down the round after the half-orc barbarian, whom they hired as a "damage absorber" but then failed to heal before the final conflict. The cleric succumbed next, after drinking every healing potion the party had. The last PC standing was the elven wizard, feebly swinging his longsword because his spell selection--well, it outright sucked.

It was a tragedy, a tragedy....
