Centaurs start at level 4, so you get enough spells at the beggining to make it worthwhile! Plus, he is an awsome fighter because centaurs get +8 strength!! You have GOT to try it in your game. :D |
| Esponer01-29-06, 11:11 AM | Centaurs have four racial hit dice and two level adjustment. This means that to start in a 1st level centaur bard is amongst the company of 7th level characters. He's also still a 1st level bard, so he doesn't have any extra spells. |
| EvilVegan01-29-06, 11:14 AM | Yea, centaur bards are actually worse bards than regular bards. This also applies to satyr. Who are natural musicians. |
| Danflor01-29-06, 11:16 AM | I have to disagree with that only because when they use up all their spells, they can still kick-butt in a fight! |
| BW022201-29-06, 12:04 PM | I think most folks would rather play a 7th-level human bard -- with 7d6 hit points, 3rd-level spells, feats and skills (60+ skill points) designed for a bard, 7 bard songs/day with suggestion, bardic knowledge, etc. rather than a creature with 4d8+1d6 hit point, 0-level spells, and 20 skill points (only 6 of which are bard-specific) at 7th-level! Besides its somewhat annoying to be unable to climb a rope, fit into a dungeon, and always being told to sleep in the stables. You are 7th-level. Kicking something with a +4 BAB is a pretty silly plan when you are likely to be facings three tigers, four ogres, two hill giants, or a pair of bugbear shamins tossing lightning bolts at you. Sorry... centaur makes a terrible bard. You want something with a lower LA, with a Cha bonus, and whose skills and abilities complement the bard -- say a Aasimar, Satyr, etc. |
| CaoSlayer01-29-06, 03:46 PM | in general LA for a primary caster it is a very bad idea, so +6 LA it is awful. while the bard 1 centaur cant cast a single level 1 spell and only can use bardic music once per day, the level 7 kobolt (insert sucky +0 LA race here) bard can sing 7 times a day and use level 3 spells. |
| Hariman01-29-06, 04:47 PM | And as others have mentioned, Taking one level of Fighter before going all bard means that you can take Battlecaster. This let's you wear Mithral fullplate with no ASF and still self buff with Blur or Displacement. (Thanks CaoSlayer!) Take Arcane Strike/Whirlwind Attack and you become the melee bard from hell! Well, maybe not that bad, but still pretty effective. |
| Talen Lee01-29-06, 05:28 PM | Uh, yeah, dude, your character may kick ass, but it's the centaur doing that, not the bard. |
| Apollo's Lyre01-30-06, 07:46 AM | That's true. You might as well take a martial class if you want to kick butt with a centaur (literally or figuratively). |
