Base Class Choice Restrictions [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-14-06, 09:21 AM I'm not entirely sure if this is the correct forum, but this does relate to classes. A friend of mine is currently in an adventure where his character died, and instead of having him be resurrected, he decided to make up another character.

When he first started the adventure all of the players had the choice of using the PHB and all of the Complete books to choose their base class (there is a swashbuckler, ninja, warlock) but now my friend is restricted to only using the PHB, is this in anyway fair?

11-14-06, 09:34 AM Fair is up to the DM. Yes, it does not seem fair but the DM might be trying to simplify things for either himself or the player. A lot of the out of PHB classes rely more on tricks & using an unusual play style.

Using feats though you should still eb able to do a lot as a player. Sometimes parties can be such a mess with various sub-classes a DM might want to direct the party a bit more to strengthen them. We had a party with 4 different shades of rogues, none running pure rogue (altough one was just a rogue multiclass).

What your friend should do is approach the DM & ask him what role he feels the party needs. If the DM says, "Well the party doesn't really need any thing in particular" Then he can present his class choice asking why it wouldn't be allowed. Really the best thing to do though is just play one of the standard classes. You can still do a lot with them.
Heck if you want variety in the classes seem if you can use some of the Unearthed Arcana variants.

The DM did not give much of a reason as far as I know, my friend was just using a base fighter (but what he was originally using isn't the point) and no the DM did not mention this prior to play.
