Class Features
All of the following are class features of the assassin.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency
Assassins are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the bolas, broadblade short sword, crossbow (hand, light, or heavy), dagger (any type), dart, garrote ring, lightblade, longsword, quickblade rapier, rapier, sap, shortbow (normal and composite), short sword, shuriken, souba, straightblade, swordcane, thinblade, and weighted cloak. Assassins are proficient with light armor but not with shields.

Sudden Strike
If an assassin can catch an opponent when she is unable to defend herself effectively from his attack, he can strike a vital spot for extra damage. Whenever an assassin’s target is denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), the assassin deals an extra 1d6 points of damage with his attack. This extra damage increases by 1d6 every two assassin levels thereafter. An assassin cannot use sudden strike when flanking an opponent unless that opponent is denied its Dexterity bonus to AC. This damage applies to ranged attacks against targets up to 30 feet away.
An assassin can only use sudden strike on living creatures with discernible anatomies—undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures lack vital areas to attack. Any creature that is immune to critical hits is not vulnerable to sudden strikes. The assassin must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. An assassin cannot use sudden strike while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach.
An assassin cannot use sudden strike to deliver nonlethal damage. Weapons capable of dealing only nonlethal damage do not deal extra damage when used as part of a sudden strike.
The extra damage from the sudden strike ability stacks with the extra damage from sneak attack whenever both would apply to the same target.
Treat sudden strike as sneak attack for the purpose of qualifying for feats, prestige classes, item bonuses, and similar options.

Trapfinding
Assassins can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20.
Finding a nonmagical trap has a DC of at least 20, or higher if it is well hidden. Finding a magic trap has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it.
Assassins can use the Disable Device skill to disarm magic traps. A magic trap generally has a DC of 25 + the level of the spell used to create it.
An assassin who beats a trap’s DC by 10 or more with a Disable Device check can study a trap, figure out how it works, and bypass it (with his party) without disarming it.

Evasion (Ex)
At 2nd level and higher, an assassin can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If he makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the assassin is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless assassin does not gain the benefit of evasion

Uncanny Dodge (Ex)
Starting at 4th level, an assassin retains his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) regardless of being caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. (He still loses any Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized.)
If the assassin gains uncanny dodge from a second class the assassin automatically gains improved uncanny dodge (see below).

Poison Use
At 4th level, an assassin has become extremely adept with the tools of his trade. The assassin is no longer at risk of accidentally poisoning himself when applying poison to a blade.

Death Attack
At 5th level, if an assassin studies his victim for 3 rounds and then makes a sudden strike with a melee weapon that successfully deals damage, the sudden strike has the additional effect of possibly either paralyzing or killing the target (assassin’s choice). While studying the victim, the assassin can undertake other actions so long as his attention stays focused on the target and the target does not detect the assassin or recognize the assassin as an enemy. If the victim of such an attack fails a Fortitude save (DC 10 + 1/2 the assassin’s class level + the assassin’s Int modifier) against the kill effect, she dies. If the saving throw fails against the paralysis effect, the victim is rendered helpless and unable to act for 1d6 rounds plus 1 round per class level of the assassin. If the victim’s saving throw succeeds, the attack is just a normal sudden strike. Once the assassin has completed the 3 rounds of study, he must make the death attack within the next 3 rounds.
If a death attack is attempted and fails (the victim makes her save) or if the assassin does not launch the attack within 3 rounds of completing the study, 3 new rounds of study are required before he can attempt another death attack.

Aura of Despair (Su)
Beginning at 6th level, an assassin radiates a malign aura that causes enemies within 10 feet of him to take a -2 morale penalty on all saving throws. The penalties and range increase by -2 and 10ft. every six levels thereafter (12th, 18th, etc).

Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex)
At 8th level, an assassin can no longer be flanked, since he can react to opponents on opposite sides of him as easily as he can react to a single attacker. This defense denies rogues the ability to use flank attacks to sneak attack the assassin. The exception to this defense is that a rogue at least four levels higher than the assassin can flank him (and thus sneak attack him).
If the assassin gains uncanny dodge (see above) from a second class the assassin automatically gains improved uncanny dodge, and the levels from those classes stack to determine the minimum rogue level required to flank the assassin.

Improved Evasion (Ex)
At 10th level, an assassin’s evasion ability improves. He still takes no damage on a successful Reflex saving throw against attacks, but henceforth he takes only half damage on a failed save. A helpless assassin does not gain the benefit of improved evasion.

Sound Imitation (Ex)
At 12th level, an assassin can mimic any voice or sound he has heard. Listeners must succeed on a Will save (DC 10 + ½ the assassin’s class level + the assassin’s Int modifier) to detect the ruse.

A Thousand Faces (Su)
At 14th level, an assassin gains the ability to change his appearance at will, as if using the disguise self spell. This affects the assassin’s body but not his possessions. It is not an illusory effect, but a minor physical alteration of the assassin’s appearance, within the limits described for the spell.

Hide in Plain Sight (Su)
At 16th level, an assassin can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as he is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, an assassin can hide himself from view in the open without having anything to actually hide behind. He cannot, however, hide in his own shadow

Free Movement (Ex)
At 18th level and higher, an assassin can slip out of bonds, grapples, and even the effects of confining spells easily. This ability duplicates the effect of a freedom of movement spell, except that it is always active. An assassin loses this benefit when wearing medium or heavy armor or when carrying a medium or heavy load. An assassin can suppress or resume this ability at will.

Anonymity (Ex)
At 20th level, an assassin is no longer detectable through supernatural means. He becomes immune to all spells of the divination school and powers of the clairsentience discipline. This ability only affects the assassin and his possessions. This can not be overcome by any spell, power, or ability; epic or otherwise. An assassin can suppress or resume this ability at will.
A multiclassed assassin can cast/manifest his divination spells or clairsentience powers normally without lowering this immunity; however he must lower this defense in order to cast/manifest those same spells/powers from an outside source (staves, scrolls, dorjes, power stones, etc).

Ex-Assassins
An assassin who becomes lawful good or chaotic good cannot continue to progress in levels as an assassin. He loses his Death attack and his Aura of despair, but retains his other assassin abilities.

I like Swift Strike, Quickened Death Attack, and Offensive Gridlock. I was going to make a class with a capstone ability almost identical to Offensive Gridlock but it looks like you beat me to it. :)

I was taking a look at this and also thought of the Hired Assassin class. Seriously, if you two were to merge your classes together, I think you'd really have something. Perhaps putting Thousand Faces and Sound Imitation as special abilities in the Hired Assassin or something like that.

Other than that, though, it looks quite balanced. Good job!

Should I give it a full base attack to give it a chance against monsters that are immune to critical hits?

Well, I don't think it would be a horrible idea. As it is, the ninja from the CAdv would beat this thing silly. They would probably be better off with a full bab. That would set the ninja as better at sneaking than killing (though quite good at both) and your assassin as better at killing than sneaking (still being good at both.)

Cool class. I'll have to re-read it, but I may take it. ;)

One nitpicky thing: the DC on Death Attack should probably be 10 + 1/2 class level + Int mod. Typically, base classes add half their level (as it's a 20 level class), and PrCs add their full level (as it's typically a 10 level class).

Again, the class looks pretty good!

Concerns

The save DC of Death Attack
The caster level of Nondection Cloak (Nondetection Cloak was the capstone ability of a 5 level PRC).

Should I modify the DC of Nondetection cloak or make it an immunity to divinations?

I think you could make it an immunity to divinations without it being a power problem.

My only one concern is your Epic progression, it really looks too strong in comparison to the assassins's or the rogue's Epic progression.

Edit: Aside from the Epic progression, the class looks great and needs no real further adjustments

I think you could make it an immunity to divinations without it being a power problem.

I agree, in fact I did it myself for my collection of custom classes. It doesn't seem overly powerful...in fact its a class ability of another custom class I got from these boards, Commando, by Lord Pendragon.

Umm, full BAB, six skill points/level AND sneak attack every odd level?? And that's if you make the death attack 10+1/2 assassin level +Int mod.

No other base class has comparable abilites - and not even many prestige classes. Invisible blade (Comp.War.) had full BAB and 1d6 SA per 2 levels, but it's only a 5 level class. It had d6 HD, and 4 skill points/level.

This completely beats every other class in the PHB hands down, except maybe, just maybe, cleric.

Either:
1) Tone the BAB back to 3/4, and seriously think about putting a limit on some of those spell-like and extraordinary abilities;
or 2) Drop some of the sneak attack to 1d6 per 4 levels.

As for the epic progression, drop the sneak attack as suggested above (24,28,32 etc...) and make the bonus feat at every odd epic level.

Other than that, I'd love to play this class, but it's just too powerful.
CroupandVandemar

i agree, no doubt. you made a god class.

The skill points were reduced to (4 + Int Modifier)

The Fortitude save was changed to (DC 10 + 1/2 the assassin’s class level + the assassin’s Int modifier)

The Epic bonus feats were moved from every two levels to every four levels (It now matches the original assassin's epic progression)

Nondetection Cloak was changed to

Nonexistent (Ex)
At 20th level, the assassin gains immunity to divinations, which functions as a nondetection spell except that it affects only the assassin and his possessions. This can not be overcome in any way. The assassin can suppress or resume this ability as a free action.

Not to be rude, But would it kill you to use the Tab key which automatically aligns the columns than using all those spaces that come out wrong anyway?

If you wan't I will fix and post it my self.

Perhaps re-add it at 3rd level? I cant see it as overpowering but it wouldent be an assasin without toxins :allalone:

I dont care about resisting the toxins just the actual abiliy not to kill yourself when trtying to get some extra umph!

I think full bab should be added back in. It isn't too ridiculous. perhaps make death attack less powerful (weaker than prestige) or eleminate uncanny dodge?
Tweedledope

01-12-07, 10:53 PM
A few things...
Don't add BAB back in. A true Assassin doesn't need multiple attacks, he needs only one.
Ninjas are smart. Give them something for intelligence rather than making it virtually a one-stat class. I vote for Int to Damage at around level 7 or so. This will prevent people from wanting to simply dip into the class for a quick benefit. Int to AC might work as well but, you're pushing it there.
Free Movement should be reworded slightly to include that you can turn it off when you wish. Otherwise, you can't even initiate a grapple with a permanent Freedom of Movement effect active.
No way would I take this class with only 4 + Int for skills. I strongly urge you to bump that up to 6. 8 is pushing it but, 6 is adequate.
In lieu of a higher BAB, I would give it a good Will save. Here is my reasoning: you're effectively a Rogue without the versatillity. A rogue can do most of the same things you can do but, has other options along the way. With the same BAB and same saves, it'd be foolish for a PC to not take Rogue instead of this class. However, give it a good Will and, boom, you're cookin' with gas.
Those are just some quick ideas I have. Overall it seems like a good class, albeit slightly underpowered.

About the bab, yes an assassin needs only one attack, but shouldn't it hit all the time?
Tweedledope

01-14-07, 01:19 PM
Well, considering you should catch them flat-footed...yes. Brilliant energy could help negate armor bonuses. Essentially, you don't need BAB to tear through someone.

1) "Good" implies altruism, respect for life, and a concern for the dignity of sentient beings. Good characters make personal sacrifices to help others -The Player's Handbook

The "Good" alignments were left out as this class does not have respect for life, or respect for personal freedom.
Neutral Good was later allowed because of the view of killing for the greater good or for the good of the community, etc.

2) The DC is for the listener to be able to notice the difference in the sound.

I don't get it. Why does an assassin have an aura? Makes very little sense to me. I understand it's a great thing to have, but WHY does the assassin have it?

Why a d8 hit die? I don't think assassins are really combat-based. The flavor for a hired murderer is to sneak up, slit a throat, and get the hell out of there undetected. IMHO, d6 hit die.

It's been said before, but it really is annoying. Fix the format of the table. Please?

1) The Aura of Despair was put in to mirror the feeling the victims would have, that feeling of helplessness and confusion they would feel as they see their best friend's face melt away to reveal a complete stranger with a dagger drawn

2) The d8 hit die was to put this class more on par with the scout or the ranger, nobody complained so i didn't think much of it. The scout essentially does what you described....sneaks up behind someone, shoot them in the back, leave.

3) I done messing with the chart, it is staying as it is. I seen far worse table formatting than mine.

Thanks,

I thought 2 worked the way you explained it.

As for Chaotic Good, i feel that a CG character could kill someone with out remorse, if the end result was good. Killing a infamous ruler, that tortures his subjects could be a good thing to do.

I see chaotic Good, as doing good but not following the laws of the land. This could be Robin Hood, robbing the rich to feed the poor, or it could be a vengalainte killing wanted criminals.

I understand that our interputations of alignment might differ, and thats fine. No need for alignment war to start up. I just wanted to know what your thinking behind the restrictions was, and I wanted to share my view.

But like I said before, good job with the class.

Why don't you change Nonexistant to be constantly under the effects of Mind Blank? I think that would be way cooler.

I like the class, although I am always hoping to find a 'Royal Assassin' of some kind. (A non-evil assassin)

Although, I really like the spell like of the Assassin PrC in DMG. Invisibility, Greater Invisibility, Freedom of Movement, Wraithstrike, Glibness, Modify Memory, Spider Climb, ect.

maybe I'll maybe a Royal Assassin class that's 20 levels and can cast up to 4th level spells like a Ranger or Bard. That would be cool.

Edit: this would be a really neat idea for an Assassin:
Level 1: Constantly under the effects of Untetectable Alignment
Level ??:Constantly under the effects of Comprehend Languages
Level ??:Constantly under the effects of Tongues
Level ??:Constantly under the effects of Pass Without Trace
Level ??:Constantly under the effects of Freedom of Movement

Level ??:Constantly under the effects of Mind Blank

Level ??:Constantly under the effects of True Seeing
Level ??:Constantly under the effects of Mind Blank
Level ??: A Thousand Faces.

I'd just like to say that bards cast up to 6th, and I Paladins and rangers cast to 4th.

One thing missing from nearly every Assassin version is the ability to permanently kill. After all, if you are in a world where every city has access to a cleric who can cast raise dead then the ability to assassinate doesn't mean much. Give them some mid-level ability that requires a foe who is a victim of their death blow to be raised/resurrected only by magics equivalent to a miracle or wish. At higher levels, make it so that victims can only be raised/resurrected only by beings with a divine rank.

Also, I would change their sneak attack to Surprise Attack (or Sudden Attack, or whatever it happens to be called). Assassins are ambush predators, attacking via surprise and planning. I do not see them dancing around flanking foes in combat like the typical rogue would do. Assassins are very much unlike the typical rogue.

Also, at some level (4th or 5th maybe) I would give an Assassin the Trapfinding ability. An assassin who cannot detect and avoid the traps put forth by his target has a guaranteed end to his future. With 6 skill points per level, the Assassin will never be as good as a Rogue dedicated to finding traps... but he can afford a few skill points here and there to at least avoid a majority of traps.

Well, considering you should catch them flat-footed...yes. Brilliant energy could help negate armor bonuses. Essentially, you don't need BAB to tear through someone.

Emphisis mine.

Something doesn't seem right about the idea of an assassin using a glowing weapon.
Then again, if you catch the target alone, I guess it doesn't make a difference (a +1 Brilliant energy dart will shoot through the enemy and keep shooting through the ground until it hits some roots).

Well, to be honest if I had this option, I wouldn't play as a rogue.
or a rogue assasin. I like the idea of Basing out the assasin class you should have the HD a d6, your assasin should have to kill and run. the aura makes sense, but that essentially means that their kill DC is 2 higher, which could make all the differance. Flavorly, this is an assasin, but mechanically its far too powerful as a scout. I would almost say lower there skills to a 4, but then they may not even be able to even cover there bases, (granted they will most likely have a high INT)

I know it may be something you thought of, but wouldn't an Assassin having trapfinding make sense. One of the major focuses of an assassin in my mind was creating the way to kill a target without being present. Like setting up spikes to shoot out the soup bowl when he goes to eat dinner.

I know a non WOTC base class with rogue sneak attack and full BAB, the class was fine. It had 4+int skills but 2 more skills can't turn a balanced class over a cleric.

Just got an idea, death attack deals double sneak attack damage instead of killing with save.

The assassin PrC is a PrC for a reason. it is a very specialized field to go into. a core class should be able have variety and PrCs should specialize in one of those fields. an assassin should stay as it stands as a PrC.

The class sounds pretty good I also agree with 3/4 BAB 6+Skill pts and 1d6 Hp, as for spells, if you took out some abilities it could easily work as those of a Paladin or Rangers (4th+ and then get a couple of spells) cos a big part of the assassin for me its the cool spells he has access too, I know you said well if you want spells be the Prc, but then whats the point of this one, i thought the Assassin 10/ Assassin 6 was a joke...
And aura is just to much, having death attack and all incresing the dc of it by 2 and then 4 and then 6 is too much.
The dc for the death attack using 1/2 was a great fix though.

Good job. I'll check this thread again to see what happens lol

I created this class because I hate spellcasting classes. I added Sound imitation, A thousand faces, and Free movement to make up for the loss of spells. The aura advances by 2 and increases in range because at higher levels the -2 is almost negligible, and the paladin of tyranny/blackguard can increase their aura from 10ft. to 100ft. with the use of an epic feat. My assassin can not gain an aura that large until level 60 while a paladin of tyranny/blackguard can get it at level 28.

Umh...not everything is in place...

First of All, the Assassin is not meant to have Sudden Strike, and it is not strange that officially it was given to the ninja, since the "occidental assassin" is used even to ambush and to fight, so it is reasonable to let him strike deadly even on flanking. The "stealth at all cost" behind the idea of the sudden strike is more oriental, therefore is more suited to the ninja.

More, Aura of Despair is a bit out of flavor, and it is strange that you give it to the assassin on a "spellcasting hate" base. The same, and more, to the Free Movement: it is almost senseless (Even make it a extraordinary ability...).

Finally, Anomnity is way too powerful for the official standars. If you check the Spymaster and the Zhentarim Spy PrC, you will find a more balanced way to build up the "non detection" abilities. Just say "immune to all of them" is too much, and after all i think it is not so suited for an assassin, that is suppose to relish on disguise and direct spying less and to stealth and ambush more.
