| Kashana12-22-05, 01:46 PM | Hi, I'm pretty new to D&D and I'm making a character for the first time on my own. I wanted to know exactly what the difference was between a base and a prestige class. Thanks a bunch! |

Anyone can take levels in a base class at any level without meeting any requirements other than having enough XP to gain a level. There are other differences, but those are the defining ones. |

Also note that when you multi-class normally with two base classes there is an XP penalty, with Prestige Classes there is no XP penalty. Another difference is that Base Classes always go up to 20 levels, Prestige classes are usually somewhere between 3 and 10 levels only. Oh, and Prestige classes are for filling very specific roles and base classes are supposed to be very general and customizable. |
