Weapon and Armor Proficiency A battle artificer is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light armor, medium armor, and shields (except tower shields). Mage Grip- At first level, every non-magical weapon (including bonded weapons) wielded by the Battle Artificer becomes magical, gaining a +1 enhancement bonus. Unlike magic weapons created by normal means, a Battle Magus need not spend experience points or gold pieces to accomplish this task. A weapon losses this bonus if it is no longer wielded by the Battle Artificer. Bonded Weapon: A Battle Artificer is capable of bonding with a weapon that he is proficient with. Doing so takes a full day and uses up alchemical materials costing 100 gp. A Bonded Weapon gains certain characteristics based on the level of the Battle Artificer. The bonded weapon becomes an extension of the Battle Artificer, and while many Battle Artificers carry a second, third or even fourth weapon, not all of them can bond to multiple weapons. A Battle Artificer can only bond to a number of Weapons equal to his Charisma ability modifier. Patchwork- Beginning at 2nd level, on your action, before making attack rolls for a round, you may choose to substitute the type of damage dealt by your bonded weapon (slashing, piercing, bludgeoning) with another. For example, you may treat damage dealt by a longword as slashing rather than piercing. Furthermore, the Battle Magus may transfer any Mage Grip enhancement bonus they have into potent magic. On your action, before making attack rolls, you may choose to transfer +1 of your mage grip enhancement bonus in order to treat damage done by your bonded weapon as cold, fire, or electric energy type damage in addition to its normal (slashing, piercing, bludgeoning) type. At 5th level, you can now choose sonic or acid energy types. These two energy types require transferring +2 of your mage grip enhancement bonus. At 9th level, you can now choose to turn your bonded weapon into lawful, chaotic, holy, or unholy damage. This requires a transference of +3 enhancement bonus, but if you attack a creature with an opposing alignment, you deal double damage. You may not use a type of damage that is against your alignment. Good characters may not use unholy damage, Lawful characters may not use chaotic damage, Evil characters may not use holy damage, and Chaotic characters may not use lawful damage. True neutral characters may use any type they wish. The Battle Artificer may use any of these patchworks in conjunction as long as they have enough mage grip enhancement bonus to transfer. Force- At 6th level, on your action, before making attack rolls for a round, you may choose to have your bonded weapon deal it’s damage for that round as though it were force damage. This ability can be used a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier and cannot be used in conjunction with the patchwork ability. At 20th level, the battle magus may use this ability a number of times a day equal to his Charisma modifier +2. Flash- At 10th level, by making a full attack with your bonded weapon, you may choose to have your target deafened in addition to taking damage from the attack. The DC for saving against flash is equal to 10+Cha bonus+Mage Grip Bonus and is made after each successful hit. After the attack is complete, the target becomes deafened for a number of rounds equal to the number of failed saves. At 12th level the target may instead be blinded for one round for each failed save. At 16th level the target may instead be stunned for one round for each failed save. This ability can be used a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier and may be used in conjunction with the patchwork ability. At 20th level flash has a DC of (15+Cha bonus+Mage Grip bonus) and may be used a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier +1 Shunt- At 14th level, on your action, before making attack rolls for a round with your bonded weapon, you may choose to shunt your target in addition to dealing normal damage. The driving force of the attack pushes a target of one size category larger than your or smaller back 5 feet if the subject fails a Strength check (DC 10 + Cha bonus + Mage Grip bonus). If a wall or other solid object prevents the target from being pushed back, the subject instead slams into the object and takes an additional 1d6 points of damage. At 19th level, you may choose to shunt the target back an additional 5 feet. If a wall or other solid object prevents the target from being pushed back, the target instead takes an additional 2d6 points of damage. This ability can be used a number of times per day equal to you Charisma modifier and may be used in conjunction with the patchwork ability. At 20th level shunt has a DC of (15 + Cha bonus + Mage Grip bonus) and may be used a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier +1 Speed- At 18th level, when making a full attack action with his bonded weapon, the Battle Artificer may make one extra attack with it. The attack uses the wielder’s full base attack bonus, plus any modifiers appropriate to the situation. (This benefit is not cumulative with similar effects, such as a haste spell.) |

| Magius_Rerecros06-29-07, 09:38 AM | I just wanted to point something out, a grammatical error maybe? In the description of patchwork, the example is making a longsword a slashing weapon instead of a weapon. But... a longsword ALREADY does slashing damage. I think you might have meant that you can have a longsword deal damage instead of slashing damage. Or you might have meant a shortsword, or whatever. Just thought it'd be good to point that out. All in all, it's an interesting class. I don't really see many balancing issues or anything. |
| Banatine06-29-07, 09:49 AM | The class looks pretty cool. The best part of the class to me (concerning one of the biggest problems in most games i've played) is that you will almost never need to buy magic weapons, so you can save your money for all sorts of wonderous things and armour. However, i'm not sure that battle magus is the right name. Mainly because the class doesn't seem to have access to any real magic (I was expecting something more duskblade-ey). I would have thought something like mystic swordsmen would be more appropriate. Sorry i don't have any actual criticisms. |
| Magius_Rerecros06-29-07, 12:09 PM | Yeah, I thought the name was a bit misleading too. I saw it and I thought more of a nuker-type caster. Like someone who focuses on direct-damage spells, or maybe battlefield control. |
| Piropoint07-03-07, 06:36 PM | interseting i hadent thought that my choosen name might have confused people. How about Battlefield Artificer. Lets see what kind of responce i get from just changing the name... |
| Tallow07-14-07, 01:22 PM | I like the class. I think it's turned out pretty balanced and useful all at the same time. It does fit a niche in a unique way. That's part of why I spent the time I did to help you with it. Anyways, good job on it. |
