| DragonX22X07-11-04, 06:32 PM | hey a friend of mine emailed me what i think is a cool class for those people who like fighters and wizards/sorcerers with out multiclassing it is called the Battle caster so below i will write the stats for it Battle caster Alignment: Any Hit dice: D6 Skill pts per lvl: 2+int mod Base attack bonus:as rogue in phb saving throws: as druid in phb class skills: climb, concentration, diplomacy, craft, handle animal, intimidate, jump, knowledge arcana, ride, spellcraft, and swim spells: spells gained as a sorcerer but limited to the following schools abjuration, evocation, and conjuration only weapon proficiency: all simple weapons and 5 martial weapons armor proficiency: all light and all medium armor* a battle caster wearing medium or heavy armor incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has somatic components battle casters gain combat casting as a first level feat they gain bonus feats on lvls 2,4,8,10,14,16,and 20. these feats may be selected from the fighters bonus feat list or from the metamagic feat list Armored casting: battle casters are so used to casting in armor that there spell failure chance is reduced at first lvl when wearing any armor the character is proficient in their spell failure chance is reduced by 5%. this increases by 5% at 6th lvl and every 6 lvls afterward. It is not possible to reduce a spell failure chance below 0. so hey let me know what you think and if any of you guys and gals would use it in your campain |

In particular: - It gains the best features of both the fighter and the sorcerer. Lots of feats, 2 good saves, decent hit points and medium BAB. - Limiting the spells to three schools is a minor penalty given that they get the number of spells known as a sorcerer which is the most important element. The better martial weapons and armor are also too good. I would go with a battlesorcerer from UA. Losing spells known is an adequete compensation. |

You remove dependence on Cha (which was a balancing factor for a sorcerer) and make Wis (bonus to will saves) and Con (hit points and fort saves) the key attributes. The reason that I don't like this class is that it is uniformly better than a pure sorcerer or wizard. Okay, you are limited to three schools. Pity that they are 3 of the best schools and therefore hardly count as a gimping effect. I mean if it was only illusion spells then it might be okay because it would indiuce situational weakness. But, as it is, this is way better than the default arcane casters. It's also way better than a Fighter 1/Sorcerer 9/Eldritch Knigh 10 type build. More hit points (73 vs. 57) , better spellcasting attribute (Wis/Con vs. Cha), 2 more caster levels (major edge), 6 more feats, same BAB, can wear armour and cast in armor, better saving throws (+12 +6 +12 vs +12 +6 +9), roughly equal weapons ability (5 martial weapons vs. all is a minor change as your character class will take everything they normally use plus you have feats to improve on this) plus reduction in spell failure for heavy armor. You balance this with pick your 3 spells per spell level from 3 useful and versitile schools. To be balanced with the core PrC method you need to gimp spellcasting somehow. Battlesorcerer (not an uncontroversial class) does it nicely by reducing spells known and spells per day by one from the regular sorcerer. Also note that sorcerer's have many spells. Losing bonus spells is no big deal. Making the spell DC (the important thing) based on the same thing that drives HP makes the HP gap here even larger with standard mage. Nope, needs to be toned down seriously. |
