Becoming a Lich [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-02-04, 02:16 PM I was just wondering what would be the best way to incorporate my LE or CE cleric turning into a lich into a campaign. My friend and I DM our adventures (we switch off every couple sessions), but he's more experienced than I am, and can be a total dick about some things. How could I let my character transform into a lich while being the most reasonable and realistic?

10-02-04, 02:35 PM Get the gold, make the box, lose your skin. Realistically, evil characters hellbent on something are going to do it, though it is probably not a good idea not to attract attention to yourself, and transform when no one can stop you, then the characters will just have to live with it, and you won't here them continually whine at you about changing your mind. Just because you are evil, doesn't mean you are stupid, be subtle, be cunning, be evil, have fun.

As far as gold gathering goes, don't ask for/steal it from the party, or the heat will be on you. Try coercing gold out of people you save when no one's looking, and threaten to kill them and eat their soul if they talk. Take more than your fare share of gold from treasure chests and hoards by getting to them first. A great trick is to use wal of stone, which is permenant, and sell the stone. You can also use stone shape to turn your walls of stone into works of art, and beef up the prices even more. Cast a light spell or continual flame on one and you have a great deific altar or statue for sale.

Create water is a great spell too. at high levels you can threaten to flood peoples homes. Curse Water is great to use on a towns water supply, especially if it supplies a local order of do-gooders. Diplomacy is an evil cleric's best friend, remember that.

10-02-04, 07:37 PM Well, as per DF canon, you must perform the Rite of Transformation. It may be useful to you in your game:

Ritual of Transformation
Necromancy
Effective level: 9th
Skill Check: Craft (alchemy) DC 30, 3 successes, Knowledge (arcana) DC 30, 3 successes, Knowledge (religon) DC 30, 3 successes
Failure: Death
Components: V, S, M, F, B
Casting Time: One night
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: Instantaneous

This incantation kills the Aspirant and sends her soul into the prepared phylactery. Three days later, she rises again with the lich template applied to her. This ritual turns the Aspirant into a Neonate; further rituals are necessary to progress to a higher rank.
. Failure: Death to the Aspirant. She may not be ressurected save by a greater god with the Life and Death SDA. N.B. The Gift of Life SDA alone is insufficient.
. Material Component: Transformation potion. This must be created by the Aspirant herself and requires the spells finger of death and create greater undead, the Brew Potion feat, and the expenditure of 20,000 gp and 800 xp.
. Focus: Phylactery. This must be created by the Aspirant herself and requires the spells astral projection and magic jar, the Craft Wonderous Item feat, and the expenditure of 100,000 gp and 4,000 xp.
. Backlash: In addition to the tempory death of the Aspirant, the newly created lich is nauseated (despite the usual undead immunity) for a week after the transformation.

10-03-04, 09:32 AM Thanks a lot guys. Hey, I know that the Lich is a template, so you don't "take levels" in lich do you? I know that it says that there are four levels of lichdom at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20031212a so is that the multiple castings of the Ritual of Transformation?

10-03-04, 09:49 AM I got lucky, my DM just made me find the Church of Life and Death and they happily transformed me into an evil nasty undead caster! :D

I know that it says that there are four levels of lichdom at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20031212a so is that the multiple castings of the Ritual of Transformation?I don't think the two are compatible without a lot of alteration.

The "four levels of lichdom" you're refering to is a template class. The idea behind a template class is that rather than get a template all at once (thus putting the power of your charachter higher than that of your party members), you take a level in it as you would any other class. By the end of the template class you have the template applied to you.
