| TrackStar07-01-05, 08:48 AM | A friend wants me to ask about becomming a sorcerer at later lvls, say, lvl 16. He is wondering, because our DM says that you cannot become a Sorcerer past lvl 5 if you haven't allrdy taken lvls in it. He says he read it somewhere and I'm not sure on his reasoning... So whats the deal? Do you have to become a sorcerer before a certain point? Sounds like B.S. |
| Torack07-01-05, 09:03 AM | Sorcerer is a core class, there is no reason why you couldn't take a level in it past 5. |
| CzarGarrett07-01-05, 09:06 AM | Indeed. There's no offical rule, however, while I don't agree with such a house rule, I can understand it. |
| Pax07-01-05, 09:19 AM | Nothing in the rules as published supports that notion. That's not to say your DM can't still say "must bebefore 5th level". However, I would suggest to him that it would be better to also allow someone to take a feat, "Tap Latent Powers", that lets you take Sorceror levels later than that - with some mechanical advantage to justifythe feat once those sorceror levels are taken. For example: Tap Latent Sorcery You awaken a previously unknown talent for sorcery. Prerequisite: Spellcraft (1 rank), any other skill (9 ranks), Charisma 15, must not have the ability to cast arcane spells. Benefit: Choose any 0-level sorceror spell; you gain the ability to cast this spell once per day, without preparation. Sorceror is now a Favored Class for you, in addition to any other(s) due to race or other feats. You may multiclass into sorceror at any level. Special: If you do gain a level of Sorceror, the benefitsof this feat are replaced with one additional 0-level spell known (the spell previously selected), and one bonus castable sorceror spell per day, of the highest level to which you currently have access (as you gain access to higher levels of sorceror spells, this bonus moves to the new highest spell level available to you). Normal: You may not multiclass into Sorceror after 5th level. That's got some steep requirements, after a fashion (an exemplary charisma, NO arcane spellcasting at all, and the skill requirements); the "any other skill (9 ranks)" prerequisite ensures you're at least 6th level before you are allowed to take this feat. The benefits are minor, even with sorceror levels - onebonus spell per day, and one extra cantrip known? Not oging to break the game ... but worth spending a very specific feat on, especially given that, pre-epic, we're talking about a feat that's for Sorcerors withno more than 14 levels of that class. Still, that is a house rule for a house rule. By the Rules-As-Written, nothing stops you from EVER taking the first level level of ANY class at ANY character level, solely due to your level. Alignment might still prevent you (lawful characters can't get barbarian levels, for example), but that's a different matter (and alignment can always change). |
