10-25-07, 08:24 PM OK I have a 7th level Beguiler 2nd Level Cleric (better boosting for the party) and was wondering if I should take the Mystic Theurge as a PrC? I know I'll get better spell casting abilities, but I was wondering if it was worth it at 9th level?

My Beguiler is great however, right now we're fighting Drow, and I can't cast a spell unless it's on myself or a party member to save my life. I can only boost the party so much with my few spells and I'm the type of beguiler who hides much better than fights.

I'm hoping soon that we'll stop fighting the drow and then I'll be able to level again in the Beguiler class.

And input would be appreciated.

10-25-07, 08:52 PM Well, if you already meet the prerequisites for the PrC , there's little reason not to... OTOH, I'd say you probably would have been better with taking spell penetration and/or focus and sticking only to beguiler levels anyway.

10-25-07, 11:42 PM You would need one more level of cleric casting ability before you could enter MT as you need 2nd level spells, not just 2nd level. If you do that then I'd highly recommend MT so you could advance both casting types. If you are the type that likes to hide instead of fight I hope Trickery is one of your Domains and your DM allows the domain to add hide to your MT skill list as well.

10-26-07, 02:22 AM You do need to take one more level as cleric to qualify(as already pointed out) and I'd personally also take the next level in Beguiler for the benefit it gives. However, one thing to consider is the benefits of the extra skills a beguiler gets. If you personally don't use them often(the party has another trapfinder/lockpick) then the MT is a good way to go. Otherwise you might prefer to take some more random levels in Beguiler for the skills it offers, even if you only get to add them periodically.

10-26-07, 11:27 AM It's a bit late now ;), but if you were to make a beguiler in the future that would ignore Spell Resistance, conisder playing a beguiler/conjurer (wizard specialist) that takes the ultimate magus PrC. The idea is so many of the conjuration spells totally ignore SR. Sadly, this is neither here nor there for your current PC.

As for taking the MT class, generally, I'd say no, and that's because you still need another cleric level to qualify. While cleric is a solid class, it doesn't synergize with beguiler all that well, and I feel you'd be throwing a good level after the bad by taking another level of it, just to qualify for a mediocre PrC. On the other hand, as you've already dumped 2 levels into cleric (putting you a spell level behind in beguiler), it's not that much worse for you. In your present situation, if you're willing to lose another beguiler level and lots of skill points over the next 11 levels, go for it. You will be pretty versitile.

One last thing, regarding overcoming SR: as a beguiler, you have Use Magic Device on your list of class skills. Your ranks in this should be maxed at all times. This allows you to get a slew of items, including wands of spells that ignore SR. I wouldn't use it as your primary attack, but it could be handy in a pinch.

10-29-07, 09:49 PM Thanks for the input everyone. I know I was going to just stay Beguiler all the way, but we have a very large party (7 PC's) and we have a slightly off the wall Cleric who gets attacked all the time ( we run into an awful lot of enemy Clerics) We also have a rogue who does a pretty good job at being a rogue. I am the only mage in the party and we were going to be in mainly urban settings. Well my party decided we weren't doing enough dungeon crawling. A Beguiler with all of my skills in bluffing and diplomacy doesn't get to far in our dungeon. So I started leveling in Cleric to try to compensate for my lack of dungeon crawling spells.

I know that I need to advance one more level in Cleric, however we're almost there (one more session ought to to it). Then I was wondering if I should take MT or not. We have about eight or nine more sessions in the dungeon (I hope) and I would like to try not to die anymore (I've already died twice and come close about 3 other times)

10-29-07, 10:43 PM This is a longshot, I know, but if you're a gnome, shadowcraft mage is an excellent move for a beguiler. Opening up the evocation school and some of the conjuration school might give you some much needed adaptibility.

Failing that, maybe pick up shadow evocation and shadow conjuration with your advanced learnings.

10-29-07, 11:58 PM Damn. If you had been a Beguiler6/Cleric2, I would have suggested you take a level in Bard, a level in Beguiler, and then go into Sublime Chord, and then possibly into MT. But it's too late now..
