Uratoh 03-12-08, 07:03 PM	On the surface, this is a pretty easy change...it gets new level of power manifesting every level...but on a broader sense, how do I gauge its PP reserves? I'm basically making it for some 'half illithid beholders' for a game I'm running...I don't wanna make this too complicated. It doesn't need to be PC-playable, just altered enough to be psionic instead of wizardic.
Flamewarrior 03-12-08, 07:24 PM	Don't do it. The beholder mage's woefully broken. And anything based around "manifesting 10 powers per round" will be too. You might think something with a beholder-ish flavor that's also psionic, but don't pick a single mechanic from the beholder mage.
Scion of Coldshard 03-12-08, 07:35 PM	Seems easy enough. Just take whatever a psion gets for pp's and powers and treat every level in the class as two levels of psion. Also use the rules for researching new powers but have the creature be able to spend some amount of exp to instead get it as a new power known instead of replacing an old power. That is pretty crazy powerful though. The things CR will continue to be incredibly high while its defenses will tend to be incredibly low. A more sane, although only barely, option could be to have the beholder change one of its eyestalks over to a mantle each level. Get the mantle ability, and have it only be able to manifest from that mantle on that eyestalk. Each eyestalk should have enough pp to manifest each of the powers it has access to once per day + bonus pp from intelligence. Its levels in the class limit the highest level powers it has access to (ie 6th level in the class means 6th level manifestation). Its manifester level should be equal to its class level. This forces it to use a precious feat on practiced manifester in order to be able to access higher level powers with any speed. This keeps the amount of powers it has access to down quite and requires a bit more book keeping from the dm.. but it does have the benefit of at least being somewhat less game breaking.. if only barely ;/
JulesCARV 03-12-08, 07:46 PM	Personally, I'm also opposed -- not primarily because of the brokenness of the bolder mage (I don't really know it) -- but because I think that beholders are one of the types of aberrations that really is supposed to be magical and not psionic. I'd much rather see a mindflayer- or aboleth-oriented racially restricted prestige class oriented toward psionics than a beholder-oriented psionic prestige class. This isn't to say, of course, that beholders can never ever be psionic -- nothing wrong with a beholder who takes levels in regular, run-of-the-mill psion. Or, if you wanted, you could have a beholder who is extremely paranoid about getting its brain eaten by mindflayers, and becomes an ardent with the corruption and madness and guardian mantles (or whatever) going into illithid slayer. However, I don't think that beholders should have a special, race specific class oriented toward psionics. That would be better suited for aboleths, caoutls, or mindflayers.
