How would you recreate the character Ben from the TV show LOST?

i dont know about classes, but his INT WIS and CHA are all like epic level.. at least 50.. IMO.. ben is absolutely the most sinister, intelligent, manipulative character in television history.... well, at least since alexis colby on dynasty :D

I think he would be a rogue or maybe rogue/factotum- although I don't have that book. Maxed out diplomancy, bluff, and sense motive. If there was knowledge: psychology he'd have that maxed out too.

Str 12 Dex 16 Con 16 Int 20 Wis 16 Cha 12.

Ben rules. I love the bug eyed bastard. He's not strong, but he's wicked with that collapsable baton (weapon finesse), Can withstand torture, plans 15 moves ahead, good understanding of human behavior. Yeah he's not the most charismatic, but he makes up for that with maxed social skills and emotional manipulation. And he damn sure gets in his sneak attack.

Common 3. Stats use elite array. That was easy, and I've never even seen the show.

What do you mean by "Common 3?"
dman11235

Commoner 3. Sorry. Seriously. It's pretty much impossible to make fictional characters into D&D characters. It's even harder with realistic characters like those of Lost. However, most humans are commoner 1 or 2, some of the more exceptional are 3, the great ones can get up to 4. Your Ben however may be expert 2 or 3, depending on his back ground. Like I said, never seen it, don't want to, but this should give you a fairly accurate representation. Oh, and definitly elite array (though maybe just 28 PB, like i said, can't judge him). Int 11 is somebody who's pretty dang smart, and int 13 is a genius. Average is 10, remember.

EDIT: For reference, Einstein was expert 5 at the most.

Yes. Inventing relativity turns out to be a DC 35 Knowledge (physics) check.
(8 ranks, +4 Int, +skill focus, and he rolled a 20.)

Ben would be an expert, emphasis on social skills.
dman11235

04-30-08, 11:04 PM
Actually probably only a DC 30 check. And 6 or 7 ranks, +3 int, +3 skill focus. His int was probably 16 or 17 at the most. Yes, those characters you have that start with 18 int are freakin' smart. Unrealistically smart. And it gets worse. But it's fantasy, who cares that much, if you want more realistic stuff, you'll play non magic or d20 modern.

INT 18 is roughly equal to IQ 140. INT 13 is not genius level, not even close. It's smart, nothing more.
The odds of having 18 INT are one in just about 216. That's not that rare. So why are you making it out to be super-genius level?
bkdubs123

Who says that 11 int is pretty dang smart? The average person is... well... not that smart, and to not even have a "+1" modifier above that means to me that 11 isn't hugely smarter than 10 leaving the firmly in the moderately above average intelligence. It seems to me that people with 12 intelligence or more are beginning to be included in the "above average" intelligence category, which basically means being able to study and manage B's in your classes. These people are intelligent, but not overwhelmingly so. 14 is above 12 obviously, and so is above, "above average" intelligence, though I wouldn't confuse this with genius just yet. people with 13~15 Int, are those who must still work hard to obtain and retain their knowledge, exercising their mental muscles daily. It's those at 16 Int and over that I might consider genius level, and 16 is likely the lower end beginning around IQ 120~130.

FYI: "Genius" = IQ 150

So, I'd say it's something like:
INT 10 ~ IQ 100
INT 16 ~ IQ 150
INT 18 ~ IQ 200

INT 3 ~ IQ 40 or possibly even 50 to be more functional

A rock has at least IQ 3, as that's what it takes to be able to lie still :P
It takes IQ 40 to be able to learn how to open doors.

Hmm, so, why doesn't feats like Power Attack require at least INT 6 or something? :D
dman11235

Int score is not directly or indirectly related to IQ! IQ is your capacity to learn, and int is how much you know. Having a higher IQ allows you to have a higher int score, but that is not a mathematical correlation. Generally higher int characters will have higher IQs, but this is not a mathematical correlation.

Also, int 11 is above average. So it's smart compared to most. I guess pretty dang smart would be 12 though.

Oh, and I make out int 18 to be super genius because the elite array is more representative of typical humans and characters. And really really smart people still only have int 13 or 14 or 15. Geniuses are probably 15+ imo.

Intelligence is not how much you know. It's your capacity to absorb and retain information and the use of said information. Which is pretty much exactly what IQ is.
As for what is representative of humans, they are rolled on a 3d6. That's right, normal people according to D&D rules are rolled on 3d6. This means that one in roughly 216 will have 18 INT. One in close to 36 will have an 18 in one of their six ability scores.
And seeing as how IQ 140(sd 15) is about one in two-hundred, it fits pretty close.

I read in the FAQ section that your basic rule for IQ was your int score x 10 in other words 10int= 100IQ 18int= 180 IQ
dman11235

Except that it is not possibly correct. Chimps do not have an IQ average of 20. Neither do dolphins. And there is no way to increase your IQ. And don't say "it's magic" because you can increase your int every 5 levels.

That's no excuse for what you said. 18 Int is equal to about 135 IQ (sd 15), not 140 like Einvaldurinn_mikli said.

About 0.0046% of the world would have an Int score of 18 using the 3d6 roll, and about 0.005% of the world has an IQ of 135 (sd 15), or the fantasy equivalent thereof.

Actually, the DnD demographic says that the highest level commoner...
is level 28. That being said, let's look at a bit smaller population.

For every 25000 people, there are(best case):
3 25th level commoners,
9 12th level commoners,
18 6th level commoners,
36 3rd level commoners.
72 1st level commoners

These numbers tell us that there are around 1.9 million 12th level characters in a population bit below 6 billion.

Oh, Re:IQ? Mine is around 135. I SO don't have int 18. 14 feels about right, maybe.

I don't know what IQ tests you've been taking online, but the last two I did under official standing had Genius level IQ at 120, 155 is the uppermost limit (with no recorded results I'm aware of over 146) and 140 as being "Vastly superior".

Einstein, for example, is recorded as being an IQ of 136.

I think it depends on the test

Various IQ tests measure a standard deviation with a different number of points. Thus, when an IQ score is stated, the standard deviation used should also be stated.

I'd drop the Strength to 10 and bump the Charisma to 14 or even 16. He's fairly capable of getting others to follow him (except in the romance department). I'd give Locke a higher score, however (16 or 18 depending on Ben's score; Ben's got at least a 4 point advantage in intelligence, however.) I'd equalize his Wisdom and Intelligence at 18. His willpower's been shown to be quite strong (witness last weeks episode).

Having said that, I only started watching Lost last season and I've found that the more they feature Ben, the more interested I am. I just can't figure out if he's truly earnest about him being a 'guardian' of the island or if he just wants the place to himself for the power it gives him. In short, is he Neutral or Neutral Evil? Either way, I can't get enough of the guy, either. One of the great all-time TV characters.

On a tangent, how would the island work as a campaign setting? I think it could be adapated fairly well and fairly quickly. I just wonder how one would classify the smoke monster? Of course, we have to know what it is first.

Then you are probably stating your sd 24 IQ score. In any case, the statistical parallels have already been drawn and with your intelligence, you should be able to rationalize them in your head. Or at least realize that your subjective opinion might not be the authority on this issue.

That is absolutely untrue. It's very easy to increase your IQ, because an IQ test is a test of your social knowledge. It is much more of a cultural exam than anything related to intelligence.

I personally know that my IQ test was inaccurately, because my examiner was leading me on in questions.

In short, IQ is dumb.

Anyway, assuming that everyone else on the island is level 1-3, I'd say that Ben'd have to be a level 4 rogue. Tops. With lots of ranks in use magic device.
