i had a friend who was working on a class, and he asked me to help him out. Befor i sent him what i made, i wanted to get some balance issues checked out, so Im posting it on here. All the flavor of the class is done by him, he just asked me for abilities and balance. That being said i dont entirly know all the flavor, except he wanted something similar to scout, with barbarian mixed in over rogue.

So it's just a combination or Barbarian and Scout?
Krusk

01-21-07, 02:12 AM
Essentially yeah, i just wanted to make sure it was balanced. Ill admit its a little lame, and i need to get his flavor text from him and throw it in here. hopefully that will help fill it out.

This seams a little powerful for a base class maby it should be a prestige class ment for a lev5 barbarian, lev5 scout.
just that a level five beserker seams to have all the abilites of a level five barbarian and a level five scout plus all the rage feats.
Krusk

They lack trapsense, uncanny dodge, improved uncanny dodge, trap finding, a bonus feat, and get trackless step later.

they also never gain greater rage, or any of the improved versions of rage. Never get Dr. Never get any of the scouts hard to follow or free movement abilities. never get blindsense, never get battle fortitude. and never get the bonus feats scout gets.

I figured if it got rid of all that, adding some more move speed bonuses and giving a diffrent, possibly worse, rage progression and full skirmish would be balanced.

but If i hear more about toning it down, especially after he playtests it. I will probably drop the AC bonus from skirmish.

You make a good point, um, I am at work and only have my phb and spell compendium so I was going off the top of my head. Sorry if I offended you. I like the concept.
Krusk

01-21-07, 03:59 AM
No offense at all. I Just realized that i hadnt made clear the diffrence between it and those classes. And i really need to get the flavor from him so i can throw it on here.

I think the concept he had in mind was something to the effect of

"you are sitting around the camp fire preparing dinner, when out of nowhere bursts a screaming madman. He runs and attacks for a lot more damage than he should be able to. Then runs off a bit, you cannot follow."

I do know one of the players in the game is planning to take it combined with spring attack, which is sort of where i got that impression.

sort of a really angry skirmisher. is my guess for now.

They gain the core combat abilities of 2 classes at the expense of the supporting abilities.

Probably be better served as a PrC that enhances Barbarian/Scouts in melee.

a lot better than the berserk prestige Dieties and demogods introduced, im considering to substitude barbarian and scout for ur Berserk in my campaign . the other classes rock 2, u rock man.

Well thank you. Ill try to make sure the most up to date version is up here for you to use.

WE playtested it some, and this version may be slightly outdated/under/overpowered.

This has been updated to most recent.

I am thinking we might have to get rid of instant rage, intimidating rage, destructive rage, but in exchange add in features like camaflauge and hide in plane sight.

We see this class as a sort of heavier skirmisher than the scout is. Once the scout -ranger scout rogue ect- finds the enemy/disables gaurds and traps they signal and a couple of these guys come in and do a strike.

hit fast hard and leave.

anyway, any comments on the change?

also probably getting rid of illeteracy. As that dosnt really fit with this anymore, thats more the barbarians thing.
bob_the_great

this seems kind of powerful. then again things sometimes seem more powerful than they are proven to be through playtesting.

A barbarian gives up an average of 1 hp per level, uncanny dodge (nice), improved uncanny dodge (very situational), trap sense (meh), DR (meh), and greater rage. In return he gets a nicer skill list and skirmish, a very nice primary class ability.

From the scout vantage point you're dropping a bunch of out-of-combat class abilities for rage, a full bab, and an average of 1 more hit point per level.

This screams 'prestige class' to me, with a prereq of skirmish +1d6 +1 AC and rage 2/day. This would guarantee that the character wouldn't rage as well as a barbarian nor skirmish as well as a scout.

I keep getting that, so im probably going to rework it in the next few days into a 10 lvl prestige and see how it looks. I would just rather play a base class straignt 20 than a base class X prestige X so thats probably why i was inclined to do it this way.
Marcotic

03-05-07, 04:07 PM
my knee jerk reaction wasthat it was too much, but yeah, now im thinkin it may not be enuff, I think that uncanny dodge and movement speed would be a step in the right direction, possibly what it needs.

It seems to me that you've combined two base classes that had an even mixture of combat and flavor special abilities, and kept only the combat abilities. I believe that you should retain some of their support/flavor abilities (or make up new abilities), and slow down the combat abilities progression. This would make them less effective in combat, obviously, but it would also make them into a more well rounded and interesting class to play.

That was my most recent though on it. As i noted it was essentially my friends class he wanted help with. " i need a class that combines scout and barbarian." so we came up with this. my thought of how to do this is to include hide in plane sight and camalfauge. In exchange getting rid of most of the rage feats. Upping skill points and taking rage progression back a bit.

reworked version updated. Prestige class version to come if i get around to it tonight. Depending on other stuff.

pretty intensive overhaul done to the "rage" mechanic, as in i removed it.

Got an idea to make it more hide and focus, then ambush like the original intent.
Ocom

04-17-07, 04:27 PM
Well i would not call something like this a berserker. More like a wise ambusher or something. Sorry, but this seems like vegetable soup.

Also i have serious doubts about how it would work.
1. move action to get to target, standard to do a skirmish attack (charge maybe)
2. move action to back off and charge again.

also, the stealth abilities seem to help little with this build. Sure you can hide, but for what? one enemy flat-footed for 1 round?

Full BAB, 2 good saves, 6 skills per level. For a "berserker"?

I'd suggest discarding it and maybe making a prestige class.

Oh, i think there was an official Berserker class somewhere.
Krusk

04-17-07, 06:08 PM
the class was intended for scouts, or people who hide, then strike only to disappear again. Spring attack builds, ect.

round one, scouting through woods, come upon camp of orcs. you are unnoticed hidden in a tree.
round 2 enter combat clarity
round 3 charge, hope to drop leader dead.
round 4 move about combat basically causeing some disorder
round 5 leave.
round 6 they cannot follow.

or for those who prefer the role of a ranged sniper, round 3, with boosted dex, snipe out leader
round 4 move 10 feet, take a short-or two- at some of the others
round 5 return to party.

The name really dosn't fit very well anymore, and any suggestions would be welcome.

thanks for the help spamalot...

Well... CREEPY! I have been working on a berzerker as well. But... i think the whole point of a berzerker is low health and no shields. Just someone whop goes in slicing.
Krusk

06-09-07, 04:33 PM
necro... but as for showing up suddenly and starts slicing, that is why they have fast movement. For unarmored they get a huge dex increase, the wisdom increase is for the skills spot listen, and possibly if you multi monk or those AC boosts as well. Then he gets abilities allowing him to dissapear again quite well, with trackless step flawless stride ect makes him very hard to track.

As for the name we are still looking for a better one, but are and have been at a loss.
FoamingPipeSnake

06-09-07, 09:32 PM
Probobly not what you want to hear...but the barbarian already makes a perfectly fine bezerker. It might as well be named bezerker. Really it only needs to be tweaked a bit to change it's flavor and it'd be fine. Say give it some sea-related skills if you wanted it to be a Nordic type berzerker.

Perhaps you could tweak the Scout and barbarian a little. Say, take the scout and switch our Skirmish completely for Rage. You would have a heckuva glass cannon. Or take Barb and switch out Rage for Skirmish, giving you an extremely hardy and fast hit-and-run fighter.

Man i hate the name we decided on for this class. Not only does it not at all fit, but then people immediatly try to match the class to the name. The name is not at all fitting for the idea of the class, and that is basically what is left for us to work on. If anything I think his original idea was for a jungle type ambusher class. think the guy who hides and waits, tracking a group for a few days then suddenly is in the camp attacking the leader then is gone again and you cannot track him.

Man i hate the name we decided on for this class. Not only does it not at all fit, but then people immediatly try to match the class to the name. The name is not at all fitting for the idea of the class,. . .

Then change the name. Because it really is true that:

the barbarian already makes a perfectly fine bezerker. It might as well be named bezerker.

A berserker was a norse warrior who would go "berzerk" (ie, fly into a rage) before entering combat. While in his berzerk state (ie, while rageing) he would be incredibly strong and resistant to physical damage.

In other words, Berserkers are Barbarians. (Well, with a few minor issues anyway. I think most berzerkers didn't wear armour. But basically the same concept.)

I think his original idea was for a jungle type ambusher class. think the guy who hides and waits, tracking a group for a few days then suddenly is in the camp attacking the leader then is gone again and you cannot track him.

Then call it the ranger. Or the Scout. Or the Wilderness Rogue.

Or if you want a name that hasn't yet been assigned to a core class, then call it a Savage. Or an Amazon Warrior.

As for game balance, I think it looks fine.

Thank you so much bear, we will go with savage for now. I am going to edit the first post.

Originally it was called berserker because it did have a rage mechanic and it did work more like a rage type character. but in working on the class that was removed, and the name did not fit anymore at all. Originally it fit a little.

The One problem with this class is that most people will have there first level in it and move on +10 ft movement great skills Skilrmish +1d6 and good saves +2 on fort. and Ref. then they just pick up scout and get another skirmish d6 just make the first skirmish or movement not at 1st and it'll still be balanced but not an amazing first level character.
Krusk

06-28-07, 06:52 PM
Its a problem that the class is multiclass friendly?
Waldo_di

06-28-07, 11:01 PM
A little bit because anyone who is an optimation Freak this'll be your first level Everytime if your any kind of non-spellcasting class. This will be a party at 1st level
1 Savage (future fighter)
1 Savage (future Ranger)
1 Savage (future rogue)
1 Wizard (wizard)
1 Cleric or Druid (cleric or Druid)
I'm just saying That you'd might want to change it a little also "Multi-Class Friendly" is a fancy term for Hey Level Dip ME!

I see ranger and rogue going into this class for a level or two dip but i cant see too many generic fighters going into it. Move speed dosn't work with fullplate, and thats generally what your average fighter uses.

And what do you think about barbarian then? rage and move speed bonus? OMG broken? and as much as i hate to use them as an example, fighter is a great 2 level class.

In our campaign we don't like to optimize fighter defense so its chain shirt all the way and they are always part BBN/FIG, maybe ranger so yes this would be a good class to dip them in

One, I NEVER EVER SAY OMG (besides just then) and yes I think if Barbarians got +10 ft movement at 3rd level it would be better. Fighter dipping 2 is good but 2 ranger in my opioin's better (well depends on what you go for). NOTHING IS "BROKEN" if you think something "broken" don't play it or fix it. (hmmm, I'm putting that last one in my sig.)
