What is the most fun/effective race/class build for levels 1 to 6 (using PHB and DMG v3.5)?

No such thing. There are good builds for doing different things, but there is no "best build." Especially when you consider that D&D is inherently a team game.

Ya, I know this. I am just trying to get some good ideas out of people. Also, there are builds that are much better than others from levels 1-6. I'm just looking to find out what other people enjoyed the most.

Best build for power at that level? that's pretty simple actualy.

human, dwarf, half orc or half ogre (if your DM allows) fighter.

Choose a weapon (I like scythes) and focus everything on it. For example, a human:

level one: I've got 3 feats so I go with Weapon focus (scythe), dodge and combat reflexes.
Level two: I have one feat I go with mobility
Level three: I have one feat I take Expertise
Level four: I have one feat I take weapon specialization (scythe)
Level five: No feats
Level six: two feats I take Spring Attack and Whirlwind Attack.
Level seven: I take the Weapon Master Prestige class.

Or, not meeting the int and/or dex prerequisties for those:
Weapon focus, power attack, cleave, great cleave, improved initative, weapon specialization, Combat Reflexes and Hold the Line. (in no particular order) for a "durr.. smash!" build :)

That's my preference for a lower level power build. Fun build is all in your court. Mainly it depends on the personality you give your character.

Now my real advice to you:

Forget power. Just think for a moment and decide what kind of character you want to play, (not 'a strong one' but develope their idea. 'a strong one' cn be a base, but then you need to go further.) and develop from there like say you want to play an arcane spell caster.. An elven arcane spellcaster who grew up on the streets. So the natural choice is a sorcerer (their power is their own, not something they learnt).. And they had to steal to get by in life, so you multiclass with rogue. etc.

Soon enough you have yourself an Arcane Trickster in the makings :)

I like that, what bonuses does an Arcane Trickster get and what are the requirements? Thanks!

Requirements
To qualify to become an arcane trickster, a character must fulfill all of the following criteria.
Alignment: Any nonlawful.
Skills: Decipher Script 7 ranks, Disable Device 7 ranks, Escape Artist 7 ranks, Knowledge (arcana) 4 ranks.
Spells: Ability to cast mage hand and at least one arcane spell of 3rd level or higher.
Special: Sneak attack +2d6.

Not an easy class to get, no siree..

That's 3 rogue + 5 wizard or 6 sorcerer. (so taking on 9th or 10th level.)

Bonuses are they keep going up in caster levels, get more sneak attacks, and get nice nifty little abilities like the ability to pick loks from range :)

Flavor wise, a sorcerer makes more sense, power wise a wizard does. If you can come up with a good reason a wizard.

Sorcerer: Pros
Makes more sense for the PrC.
High CHA, thus better at things like disguise, bluff, etc.
No heavy spellbooks to lug around.
Casts whatever spell they feel like, assuming they know it
-- cons
Less spells known
Learns spells later.
Int is less important for them.

Wizard: Pros
Higher int thus better at skills like disable device.
Higher int thus more skill points
Able to learn any arcane spell out there.
Or able to specialize in a school and only use a few schools (however with rogue levels you have Use Magic Device (and maybe you can talk your DM in to it as a class skill for the Arcane Trickster, too) which a few ranks in is enough)
Able to cast spells sooner
-- Cons
Doesn't make alot of sense, RP wise.
Lugs around a spellbook
Cha isn't as important, so they won't be very good at disguise, bluff, etc.
Has to memorize spells in advance

It's up to you which you go with,

I would also suffer from really crappy hit points, because I'm working off of d6 and d4, and on top of that my Con will probably low so I can get a decent Dex, Int, Cha.

My DM has us start with 10 in each ability and then lets us distribute 18 points any way we want with no skill going above 18. So I could do something like...

Str - 10
Dex - 17
Con - 12
Int - 14
Wis - 10
Cha - 15

Then I would probably pick Elf, putting my stats at...

Str - 10
Dex - 19
Con - 10
Int - 14
Wis - 10
Cha - 15

I guess that would make a pretty good Rogue/Sorcerer/Arcane Trickster. What do you think I should do?

Generally the arcane trickster is more of a rogueish wizard (or sorcerer) rather than a wizardish (or sorcerish) rogue. As this is the case I would suggest moving one point or more from your dex into your Cha.

I should caution you that from personal experience the Sor/Rog/Trickster really suffers from the reduced caster levels, especially at mid-to-low levels when you are trying to qualify for the PrC.

Yes, but the flavor of the character really suffers if he is a wizard.

If you are picking elf, make sure you use a sub-race with favoured class: sorceror (wild elf IIRC). Otherwise the XP penalty is going to sting. Alternatively, use a wizard instead of sorceror.

I don't think my DM much cares about favoured classes or XP penalties for multiclassing, unless you are obviously abusing the ability.

Half-orc fighter 2/barbarian 4 named Thok, 'cause that's what it sounds like when Thok get hit in head. Thok get hit in head a bunch. Thok used to it. Thok likes puppies.
