| angryman01-02-07, 07:46 AM | I plan to create a 'debuffer' (i.e., someone who is good at hurting enemies, not wanting to use such a video-gaming term, but it's accurate) who is good at giving enemies penalties, curses, negative levels and so on. As far as I can see, wizards seem to be the 'best' with- bestow curse, crushing despair (?), energy drain, enervation, slow and so on. What other classes or spells can fill this roll? |
| CzarGarrett01-02-07, 09:09 AM | Hexblade comes to mind fairly quickly. |
| angryman01-02-07, 09:10 AM | Hexblade comes to mind fairly quickly. I thought of them too, but I believe the wizard is better by virtue of greater range of ailment infliction (from enchantment, necromancy and transmutation) and the often multi-target nature of his spells. |
| frasmage01-02-07, 11:29 AM | Wizard is a better class, but dread necromancer comes to mind too |
| Cricket_God01-02-07, 11:43 AM | As the previous poster said, dread necromancer is a good option. With such a specialized range of effects that your looking to create you may also find that a sorcerer makes a better fit that a wizard due to it's increased spells per day. |

That's true, actually, but I'm sure if I look, I can find lots of nasty spells (like blindness/deafness and eyebite and so on)...but yeah sorcerer looks like a good idea. |

Clerics are an interesting choice, though I believe they lack the broad scope of spells...as far as I know they have only a few debuffs, no? |
| belthazzar111301-03-07, 01:41 AM | dragon fire adept beats them all. they have breath effects yuou can use every round that will do things like slow for 4 rounds (two rounds on a save), put everyone to sleep (or exhaust them on a save) things like that. and if you read that again you will notice you can get slow no save, exhaustion no save, and they have more. -6 to strength, ect ect. they also get a great invocation called chilling fog, reduced everyons sight to five feet, and take the feat entangling breath to make all enemys in range of your breath wepaon entangled for a few rounds. slowed, entangled chilled enemies in fog are basically just flounding around waiting for fireballs and your more damaging breath weapons to put them out of their misery. all their breath weapons are area effect free of charge, and with an invocation gained at level 1 you can make as many allies as you want immune to your breath weapons (and give them energy resist 5). read the dragonfire adept primers guide, great discussion on how to make a battlefeild controller/debuffer. seriously, no spell slots, no x/day use abilities, no worrying, and no d4hd. check them out. |

I'd never thought of these guys, which supplement are they in? But they sound very cool, different to what I was thinking of, but that's why I asked for people's opinions. :) |

| gullas01-03-07, 05:35 AM | well I don't have the book:( ...but my Dm has:DHurray........you can find it on the internet somewere I'm sure:) |
| Qube01-03-07, 05:57 AM | if 3.5 core: necromancer the most spells he get cause fatigue, exhaustion. also look at bestow curse. (greater bestow curse is also nice, but not core) ray of enfeeblement rocks with metamagic (at lvl 9: maximized ray (lvl 4 spell; 11 strength) or at lvl 13 a maxed empowered ray (lvl 6, 14 strength) ). i think is stacks with bestow curse. + use abjuration for (greater) dispel magic to debuf :D |
| Oswald Krato01-03-07, 10:06 AM | You're forgetting the number one party-friendly ailment-causer: Enervation. -1 to attacks, saves, skills...and they lose a bit of HP. Throw that around a few times (maybe with a split ray or twinned or something) and your opponent is a lot easier of a target for someone else to hit with a save-or-be-screwed. It's a ranged touch, no save...in short, it's a beautiful thing. Depending on what you're looking for, you could go for the UA variant bard "dirgesinger", warlock, hexblade...most debuffers are at the least non-good if not evil outright. |
