i want to make a character that has mystic theurge levels, however i dont want to do it with wizard... is there any other arcane caster class (core rules only please) that gets 2nd level spells at 3rd character level.

i plan on doing:
3 levels of arcane class
3 levels of cleric
10 levels of MT
4 levels of true necromancer

so what kind of arcane class should i start?

If by core rules you mean the PHB/MM/DMG then no. The only other arcane casters are the sorceror and bard, neither of which satisfies your needs.

You'd have to go outside core to the Complete Books, Oriental setting books etc.

Core Only there is nothing as Naeron said. But if you want a mystic theurge or a true necromancer type of character I would recommend visiting the Character Optimization board to discover lots of things you are not used to. The last one I have in mind involves a 9th level arcane casting and 9th level divine casting (at lvl 20) for a Druid - Bard type of character.

The only arcane classes to get 2nd level arcane spells at 3th level would be ones that are just like wizard, and only one I can think of would be the Wen ju from CA & Orin Adventures.

PS: Wu-Jen has been revised in complete arcane.

i consider the complete series and OA to be "core" .
to me core is anything WoTC has personally put out.
the opposite of this would be mongoose publishing or
green ronin ... no third party.

Usually people use Core to refer to Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual I, that's the reason we told you that there is nothing.
I recommend that you make a search at the Character Optimization Board for Mystic Theurge and/or post there. You will get some much better things than Wizard 3 / Cleric 3 / MT 10, and you character may even be playable at lower levels.

I was thinking of making a Sorcerer4/Favored soul4/Mystic Thuerge10

SO I can use the high charisma to greater affect. While the favored soul base class still uses wisdom for spell strength it uses charisma for spell per day ( or is it the other way round? ).

Unfortunately, Wizard is the arcane class that synergizes best with the requirements for Mystic theurge. You could do it with Sorcerer or Bard, but you'd have to wait until at least level 4 in each to get up to 2nd level spells.

It is a really bad idea, a really really bad idea. Think about it, when every other straight caster has lvl 4 spells you are stuck with lvl 2 spells, you cannot use armor, and your cousin the cleric wizard has lvl 3 spells. It's hard to play a Mistic Theurge don't make it harder.

Bard 9/Apostle Of Peace 1/Sublime Chord 1/Mystic Theurge 9
Bard 2/Druid 3/Green Whisperer 5/Sublime Chord 1/Mystic Theurge 9

Apostle of Peace is from Book of Exalted Deeds
Sublime Chord is from Complete Arcane.
Green Whisperer is from a dragon magazine, don't remember the number, but a search might help you to find it.
Both Builds give you 9th lvl spells in arcane and divine, in both you can cast arcane spells in light armor, with a feat from complete arcane it can even be in medium armor. Use Practiced spellcaster to boost your caster level.

PS: None of the builds is mine. I collected them from another board.

The most powerful I have heard or come up with, without intense work.

Alignment: Evil (Any)

Wizard 5 (Core) - Ur Priest 2 (Com. Divine) - Mystic Theurge 8 (DM's Guide) - Archmage 5 (DM's Guide)

It gives you level 9 Arcane spells, level 9 Divine spells, which isn't too shabby.

I like this one alot. The Ur-Priest is a cool evil PrC. Fallen paladin/Blackguard 10/Ur-Priest10/Rogue or assassin levels is a bad dude! I dont like the whole pre planned fallen paladin idea, its just lame, but a cool class combo that would be a tough MFer.

Thanatos02: Ur-Priest need a base fortitude save of 3 you just have to rearrange some things or multiclass with a fighter type.

ShadowBane: With ur-priest you loose all previous divine spellcasting so no BlackGuard, sorry.

If you were to do that, assuming 16 INT, 16 CHA, 16 WIS, 8 STR, 8 DEX. 8 CON, take a sorc6/ur-priest2/MT12

can anyone say broken?

ACK! 8 con and 8 dex! WOW you will have no HPs. With this write up you need to roll very good at level ups or face having a 40-50 HP epic PC with No AC!

You better find a group of massive fighters as soon as possible with this guy.

Your write up is far from broken.

Umm... you can only take ten levels of mystic theurge.

Wiz 3/Clr 3/Geomancer 10(put all to Wiz)/Mystic Theurge 4. This is a really nasty build I put together. Gets full Arcane progression, the ability to cast in heavy armor and with shields with no ASF, and some healing spells, to boot. And if you go epic, just finish up Mystic Theurge in epic.
