Best Electronic Character Sheets? [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-06-05, 01:13 PM In a world where updatable, "smart" soft copies continue to grow in practicality, I continue to scour the net for the very best character sheets that pull in as much information for you and calculate as many things for you as possible.

There's free ones, there's one's you can pay for, and yet it's hard to know which is the "best."

What means "best" to me? It must be user-friendly to both entering info and to read. It shouldn't be overly long, but not too slim -- it should be concise. The information that you use most should be the most prominent and accessible (i.e. 1st-page material, large fonts, strong organization, etc.).

I once saw one that also pulled in class abilities as you leveled, like a database. That's an awesome feature as well. For example, at Bard level X you pick up Bard Song X, and the character sheet had an area where that info was pulled in and summarized -- all because you made level and it was an "expected" part of being that level without having to manually type out something that would always be true for any bard anywhere of that level.

So yeah... does anyone suggest any character sheet generators/trackers like this? Please clearly state if they're free or cost something, what format they are (PDF, Excel, Access, other), and what you like most about it and what glaring feature it lacks if any.

Today's gamers I believe are more time-challenged, so whatever good electronic tools we can find, the better for us in actually getting to play the game instead of spending too much time on things that at this point can easily be automated or tracked and updated electronically.

MY REVIEWS

GOAL: I'm looking for a score of great on 3 key criteria:

a) form-fillable (i.e. self-calculating/generating for most stats, abilities, spells, etc. so that you save time and mistakes by not having to manually do math for combat stats, spells, skills, feats and other character abilities),

b) sheet style (familiar D&D charsheet look, well organized, easy-to-read, practically organized for play where most used/important info is at-a-glance on the first page, etc.)

c) completeness (how many different kinds of data, and what level of detail the sheet will calculate or pull -- i.e. will it only do basic combat stats, or can you select PHB weapons from a list; will it pull class abilities and descriptions for each level gained in a class, etc.)

*Singin' Sheet
form-fillable -- good :)
sheet style -- great :w00t:
completeness -- good :)

This one has a number of form-fillable (that's the word I was looking for in my first post, as it means self-calculating) fields, but not enough. I'm looking for one that's better than good, which this one certainly is. I'm looking for one that is great. One that'll even form-fill or pull data like class abilities and spell information by entering only a few key things (i.e. like only bard level to get an explosion of bard abilities).

Ema makes it clear on his site he has no plans to create a form-fillable charsheet; he's old school. Which is cool, but it's too bad too! This guy's sheets are breathtaking to look at, and well-organized for when you're actually gaming and they actually show things in a way that helps you understand how you arrived at certain numbers or stats.

*Kontek Digital Charsheet

This one's straightforward and similar to the Singin' Sheet. Nice bonus of saving and sending it as a small file, saving space and time. Wish there was more form-fillable fields though, just like with the Singin' Sheet.

Impressive girth, but a bit unwieldy and not a typical D&D sheet look to it, and still have some missing form-fillable fields that you'd expect.

No GREAT yet on form-fillable, which the most important thing I'm looking for. Leader so far is probably Singin' Sheet, which seems to have some of the best form-fillable fields (i.e. classes, levels, even a custom class' AB, skill points, and high/low saves).

So yeah, I'm still looking... Anyone else? :dancin:

It's Free and it only has a few associated bugs from the last versions. It can't be saved directly, but you can send your modified sheet via e-mail and then download it to save your original each time.

12-07-05, 03:38 PM I find the free standard and dynamic character sheets on http://www.emass-web.com to be every good. They include an almost complete listing of all spells by character class and a better break down of most of the important things on a character sheet (to hit modifiers, ac, inititive).

It is essentialy the WOtC sheet in electronic form - it claculates most everything and has a large space for a bio and supports any homebrew classes or PrC's.

Also, it saves your sheet as a very small .dnd file, suitable for emailing.
