Get a robe it's more castery. Um other than one first level sorcorer I played for like an hour I've not played any other casters so that's all the help I can offer. Or you could combine a shirt with those pants instead of the robe.

I've only been playing for about 3 weeks now, and in three of the 4 campaigns im in my charators have been spellcasters.:uh-huh: From what i've learned from experience and feedback from other players in my group there are a few things you need. Spellbook and spell componant pouch, these are a must. For weapons quarterstaff, maybe with a magical property eg.(flaming), light crossbow. Another useful item would be a lvl 1 bag of holding and its relitivly cheap for what it does.

Tried to help hope I did :allalone:

don't waste gold on magic weapons. You won't be using it enough to spend 8000 gp on a +1 flaming crossbow. your gold is better spent on boosting your AC. Bracers of armor, amulet of natural armor, and ring of protection do the best. Cloak of resistance does wonders for saving throws. Wands are nice too. Don't be afraid to use the charges. It is runs out, you're no worse off that if you didnt have it. Scrolls are good too, for the spells you don't often memorize.

Well, get yourself a staff and a crossbow. I wouldn't put more than a +1 on either. A robe, a pack, spell components, other necessary adventuring gear, and put everything else into filling your book.

Don't bother getting bracers of armour. Get a mithral chain shirt with a mithral buckler for a cheap +5 to ac. Must get Headband of intellect and Cloak of Resistance. Bunch of scrolls or various spells that are only useful for a specific circumstance. Pearls of power is also good but you might not be able to afford.

Problem with that, Beaver, is this thing called Arcane Spell Failure. Not fun.

Buy a wand of a harmful spell, like Fireball or something, assuming you cannot craft them yourself.

Depending on how your DM handles spell books you may need to invest some of your starting gold into spell. After that I'd recommend some defensive items, a bag of holding or heward's haversack (sp.), and a wand with some offensive power if your real spells run out.

Hm.. I'd recommend a Headband of Int +2 (4k), Cloak of Resistance +1 (1k), and a Ring of Sustenance (2.5k). That leaves you with 1500gp to buy whatever scrolls, potions, or spell reagents you may want.

I'd say forget about all equipment that make you better in physical combat (AC boosters, flashy weapons) The heward's haversack was a really good idea! This item is useful to all adventurers and ESPECIALLY wizards. Just load your wizzie with a bunch of spell storing magic items of all sorts (scrolls, wands, potions) and all kinds of spells (from damage dealers to buffs to can openers) and put them inside your sack. No more messing with special cases and bags, in your sack you'll find whatever you want with a single draw.
IMO wizards are made to cast spells and nothing more (at least nothing so sensible), so do your best at that!

+ 1 cloak of resistance 1000 gp
pearl of power (1st level) 1000 gp

Those two things are so cheap as to be obvious. Another pearl of power would be useful - one more magic missle, color spray, or mage armor will still be useful for a while at 5th level. Don't bother with bracers, you already have mage armor, but a ring of protection might be okay. Really, headband of intellect + 2 and amulet of health + 2 are the best choices I can think of though. Haversack or bag of holding both are good choices depending on what other party members have. Don't forget to stock up on a few scrolls - can you get these at half price as if you had crafted them. Can you buy extra spells for your spellbooks, and how many do you already have scribed?

Buy a +2 headband of intellect. For DCs and extra spells per day.
Don't use bracers of armor, you can afford 2 lvl1 spell slots for 16h mage armor. +4 AC has never been so cheap.

Ring of prot, amulet of NA are good and usable if you have a poor dex. Ring of prot costs 1000gp or something, but with gloves of dex +2, you get the AC plus ref saving throw. Good trade huh?

You have 10 free spells because you're at level 5. Spells I like the most are:
Mage armor
magic missile
sleep
color spray

scorching ray
web
knock
flaming sphere

ice burst (as fireball, but 30ft spread and (d4+1)/HD cold damage)
invisibility

Now the spells I'd buy as scrolls:
few identifies
maybe nothing more. It's all you need.

Bag of holding or handy haversack are good choises. If you have any extra money, you don't have to spend it right away, but if you definetely want to, buy:
ring of prot
few potions of cure light (you don't have many hitpoints any way)
pearl of power
amulet of natural armor
ring of sustenance

Remember, when you copy a spell from scroll to your spell book, it costs you quite a lot of money, be prepared for it.

Wands of any sort can be useful.

Especially if you get something like a Wand of Mage Armor, leaving your regular spell slots for other spells.

Spells!

Spells, spells, and more spells. Remember that other than the 2 you get at every level, they cost 150 gold per level to copy & scribe into your spellbook. Put together an 8th level wizard just recently, and spent about 1/3 of his starting cash on spells.

Also, scribe scrolls. It is amazingly useful to have some spells handy without having to study them every day--identify, comprehend languages, expeditious retreat, tenser's floating disc, knock, mount, see invisibility, levitate, fly, rope trick, bull strength, gaseous form, water breathing....some examples of the great utility spells that a good wizard should have handy.

After that good choices include a cloak of resistance, pearl of power, amulet of natural armor, wand of detect magic, potions of cure light. Don't get hung up on items though, they won't help you as much in the long run as being versatile and prepared.
