| Gaia06-08-07, 03:56 PM | I'm having a little debate here. I know that it all depends on which role are you planning to play, but in general, which specialist wizard is better than which? If you could make a small "Top 8" list would be great. Thanks in advance. |
| windscar1806-08-07, 04:04 PM | Well you see....there's rarely a time when you don't prepare at least one spell from 3 or 4 schools at a time, so there's really no best answer: even if you specialized in Illusion, there's nothing that says you can't prepare the rest of your spells as non-specialized spells. The only time when I can see myself preparing spells of only one school is when I play a Shadowcraft Mage. |
| Malocchio06-08-07, 04:08 PM | I'm a big fan of transmutation, I enjoy the utility of the school. But all of them have their strong points. |
| Marcotic06-08-07, 04:22 PM | I don't know, but id say from order to least to best, it would be evocation-Loads of hp damage!!! and a wall... its invulnerable:( Fun but crappy Good, can't really decide conjuration- I will make my creatures. Necromancy- Feel the might of my save or dies!!! Abjuration- I will protect my self. Divination- I will know what is coming. Transmutation- I will buff every one sThese two are IMO the best, Illusion- Greater invisibility and shadow evocation Enchantment- Dominate monster/person |
| Empiro06-08-07, 04:28 PM | Conjuration, for sure. All those no-SR spells (many with no saves), even if you're just playing core. Grease, web, solid fog, black tentacles, teleport, the list goes on an on. Conjurers also have the best immediate action special ability in the PHB2. If your DM is crazy enough to allow Master Specialist, then the Conjurer gets to quicken 3 standard action conjuration spells per day for free at level 13. Crazy! |
| Puca06-08-07, 04:52 PM | I dont know if it is possible to say that a specialist in X is better than a specialist in Y. There is the issue that Windscar mentioned, and there is also the difference between wizards of the same specialty but with different barred schools. |
| Linklegacy7706-09-07, 10:13 AM | I'd have to say illusion would be my favorite. I made one hell of a sick-nasty gnome illusionist/master specialist/shadowcraft mage/fatespinner a while ago, who was tossing around DC 40 something phantasmal killers and giving -10's to the saving throws. Illusion spells are just great if you are willing to think about it. You can do pretty much anything with them, and as long as you are creative, you'll be fine. |
| zzo3806-09-07, 10:19 AM | I prefer non-specialist wizards, but I think the best specialist wizard is Divination because you only have to select one prohibited school rather than two prohibited schools. You could give up Necromancy, it is important, but not quite as important as the other schools are. But, any specialist or non-specalist wizard is good and you can give up whatever you want, it is OK it just depends what you want. |
