It really depends on what your goal is.

For most combat types I think Shield is the best defensive spell 1st level spell.

For offense, it can be a real choice. Sleep can be tempting, now that you can out trade it at 4th level. But Enlarge Person, Magic Missile, True Strike and Charm Person can all make sense in many cases. (Enlarge Person/True Strike work best for fighter/sorcerous)

For 0 level I like Disrupt Undead, Read Magic (need those scrolls), Detect Magic, Dancing Lights.

while I respect Tarkin alot, I have a different idea on starting sorcerer spells. Keep in mind though that his INT is 3 pts higher than mine, but I make up for it with an extra level of commoner. :)

My favorite is color spray. Even Elves are stunned by it.

Then followed by Expeditious Retreat or Mount. As you can see I like mobility over anything else. Ray of Enfeeblemnt is pretty good too. Don't take Identify until maybe third level at the earliest. You won't need it until then.

For 1st level spells I like Mage Armor (the long duration makes me prefer it to shield) and either Sleep or Color Spray. Make sure you take Ray of Enfeeblement ASAP though.

For 0 level spells, I like Read Magic, Detect Magic, Daze and Prestigitation.

I tend to stay away from any damage dealers at 1st level, as none of them will come close to what the melee guys in your party will be doing.

Since I know from another thread that he is playing 3.0, I think I will post the 3.0 sorcerer ultimate spell thread summary for him:) Originally posted by PeggeyandScott:
For those who care, and I hope some of you do ‘cause I spent way too much time on this, I have reviewed all 14 pages of the Definitive Sorcerer’s Spell Thread and summarized all the opinions expressed there.

Basically, I tallied votes for each spell that people said they would take or recommended that others should take. I even applied negative votes for comments like “that is the most useless spell ever….”

Anyway, the top vote getters were (along with a few of my own comments):

1st
Magic Missile 45 votes
Shield 31
Mage Armor 22
Feather Fall 18
Grease 15
True Strike 13
Color Spray 13
Enlarge 9
Protection from Evil 9
Charm Person 8
Expeditious Retreat 8

Mage Armor depends heavily on how easy Bracers of Armor are to find in your game. If you can count on getting those early, pass on this spell. If not, it is a must-have.

I am surprised no one commented on the usefulness of Grease combined with the Sculpt Spell feat. Grease is a great spell whose only drawback is the limited area affect. With Sculpt, you can create a 40 ft cone or a 20 ft radius burst…much better than the 10ft square it normally gives and well worth a second level spell IMHO.

True Strike was a favorite amongst those with a lot of touch attack spells or melee-sorcerer types.

2nd
Alter Self 27
Glitterdust 17
Mirror Image 17
Endurance 14
Invisibility 13
Blindness 12
Cat’s Grace 11
Eagle’s Splendor 10
Knock 10
See Invisibility 9

Big debate of Glitterdust vs. See Invisibility. Again, I was surprised no one mentioned Sculpt Spell. Much like Grease, the limitation of Glitterdust is the limited area effect. So to outline someone who is invisible, you just about have to guess exactly where they are. Sculpt the Glitterdust into a cone or 20ft spread, and all you have to know is what general area they are in, which helps a lot.

3rd
Haste 37
Fireball 22
Fly 21
Protection from Elements 19
Dispel Magic 16
Lightning Bolt 14
Greater Magic Weapon 9
Slow 8

Behind Magic Missile, Haste was the biggest vote getter of them all…beat out Fireball and Lightning Bolt combined.

Almost everyone had a strong opinion on Fireball vs. Lightning Bolt. I agree with the pro-LB posters that it is more flexible (5’ vs 10’ wide) than FB, but my biggest problem with LB is that it originates at your fingertips.

If you are being a good little sorcerer and hanging out in the back ranks of the party and letting your fighters stand up front, then spells that start at your fingertips can lose you a lot of friends. I personally give Fireball the slight nod for this reason. If you frequently have an unobstructed view of your targets, Lightning Bolt appears superior.

4th
Improved Invisibility 28
Polymorph Other 22
Enervation 19
Polymorph Self 12
Confusion 9
Stoneskin 9
Dimension Door 6
Dimensional Anchor 5

Improved Invisibility and Polymorph other were right behind Haste for the number of people who thought these were fabulous spells.

Either a lot of people are running evil campaigns / evil characters, or DM’s just do not enforce the fact that channeling negative energy is an evil act (PH p140: “Channeling positive energy is a good act and channeling negative energy is evil.”) From a pure effectiveness standpoint, Enervation is a VERY good spell, but it probably could cause more alignment issues than some players realize.

5th
Teleport 24
Wall of Force 21
Hold Monster 14
Cone of cold 11
Telekinesis 11
Ghostform 7
Feeblemind 6
Shadow Evocation 5
Dominate Person 5

I tend to side with the group that says if you mis-Teleport, just Teleport again…that’s why you became a sorcerer, right? IMHO, Teleport No Error is intended more for Wizards. Either that, or your DM has a sense of humor regarding mis-teleports that makes him laugh and you cry.

6th
Greater Dispelling 21
Disintegrate 20
Eyebite 15
Chain Lightning 12
Shades 8

I am surprised how many people were willing to wait until they got 6th level spells to be able to Dispel Magic. Many of them did not even have Greater Dispelling as their first 6th level spell chosen. I agree it is a great spell, but I am not sure I could wait until 12th + level to be able to dispel magic for the first time.

7th
Limited Wish 17
Spell Turning 15
Power Word Stun 10
Teleport Without Error 10
Finger of Death 7
Mordenkainen’s Sword 6

Not many people stayed away from the 300xp cost of casting Limited Wish. A lot of them intended to use that spell to cast Permanency (which it can duplicate), and still have an emergency reserve spell with the power of Limited Wish.

8th
Horrid Wilting 19
Mind Blank 17
Polymorph any Object 16
Maze 12
Symbol 4
Iron Body 3

9th
Timestop 25
Shapechange 18
Gate 15
Mordenkainen’s Disjunction 9
Wish 6
Meteor Swarm 3

I was surprised at the overall lack of illusions on this list. Since a sorcerer craves versatility due to their limited spell selection, I would have thought Major Image would have made it onto more people’s list.

There you go. Pick from that list and you may not necessarily have the Definitive Sorcerer’s Spell List, but you will at least be in good company. My top choices for first level are 5 of the top 7 on the list. Here are the first level spells you should choose, and the order in which you should take them (IMO):

Color Spray
Shield
Grease
Magic Missile
True Strike
