Best way to be a Black mage [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-30-07, 04:24 PM Hey im looking for a class like black mage, something involved in magic and destruction. also im looking for good feats and items to have something a 4th level character would have. what books would i need and what spells would be good to know.

04-30-07, 04:33 PM if youre looking for pure power and damage, id look at warmage from complete arcane.

04-30-07, 06:05 PM Black Mage seems to be alot based on the elements, similar to Wu Jen (also Complete Arcane)

And everybody is gonna recomend CArcane, so I would head out and get it. It also contains lots of spells.

PHB 2 is also a great book with lots of spells, plus it contains Duskblade, a mage/caster hybrid that could be an interesting take on the black mage.

Since Black Mages don't wear armor, I would recommend Wu Jen, Wizard, or Sorcerer.

I would personally like the Wu Jen as a Black mage. Here is a Suggested Build:

Gray Elf Wizard 1/ Wu Jen 3
Good spells:
2nd: Rain of Needles, Ice Knife, Fire Shuriken
1st: Burning Hands, Shocking Grasp, Magic Missile

Also, you may be interested in a Fire Mage. Grab feats Energy Substitution (Fire) and Blistering Spell from CArcane and PHB 2, respectively. It's a nice flavor twist.

04-30-07, 08:30 PM If by black mage you mean the final fantasy-ish kind, then make an Evoker and you're set. Focus on doing damage and leave protection for others who care.
Why care about the rest? The dead can't harm you. =D

PS: The dead can't really harm you, only the undead. Just had to say that before someone picked it up and made a clever pun.

Im not just looking for damage or elements, im looking for destruction elements are secoundary. traps, exlposives, and destruction via elements. The black mage from FF is close but but more incorperating elements into destroying things i know i don't want armor and i have no problem with that. weapons, im not picky about i can addapt, staffs are good swords usefull and daggers fun. another thing i was looking for was crafting weapons of destruction ones that i can expend in a fight.

05-01-07, 09:25 AM Another way you could go (if you're willing to build up to it) is warlock. You get infinite blasting power, but the catch is that Eldritch Blast is not energy damage. However, if you take invocations like hellfire blast and hellrime blast, you can make it fire or cold damage. Other then that, as previously suggested, I'd go with either WuJen or Warmage.
