can Dwarves become Paladins in 3.5?

I'm having an argument with a friend and neither of us have the PH near us.

Dwarves CAN become paladins.

It just says that Dwarf Paladins are rare because they rarely put family and clan before the cause of good.

Oh course they can become Paladins, they actually make fairly effective ones.

Thanks for your replies guys

They would simply get XP penalties due to un-favored cross-classing correct?

No, Any race can be any base class with no problem. XP plenty only come into play when you have more then one class

I never played 2e or earlier, but I've picked up a fair bit about it.

Can some old hand tell me what exactly the thinking was behind saying that Dwarves cannot be Wizards and Half Elves cannot be Paladins etc?

Dwarves had magic resistance, which would have made them poor wizards due to their, well, magic resistance. Only humans could be paladins, for whatever reason.

3.x removes all race - class restrictions. no more can elves and dwarves not be paladins, no more will i long for a gnome frenzied berzerker and yet be denyed....

equality man.... so beautifle... *tear*

The reason that, in earlier editions, only humans could be paladins, bards, monks, etc. was, quite simply that the designers didn't think that anyone would play a human otherwise.
The rest was just racial stereotyping and was fairly pointless.

Dwarves make very affective paladins actually. They do take a penalty to Cha, which sucks, but other than that, a Dwarven paladin of Moradin is a pretty common thing to see these days.

And as for the old editions only allowing humans to be paladins, etc. I would have to agree with the above about how they did that so there would be a reason to play a human. In the old editions humans didn't get ANY racial bonus'. But they had race specific classes and they were the only race allowed to go above level 12. I never liked that rule, I don't see why a 900 year old elf couldn't be as powerful as a 70 year old human. R.A. Salvatore tried to explain it with one of his Drizzt Essays, I don't remember exactly which book it was in, but it had something to do with none of the other races being ambitious enough to become that powerful.

Anywho, 2 cents have been added to the bank.
