Black Guard/Paladin [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-12-06, 04:08 PM Im wondering. Lets say a Paladin Falls from grace and becomes a blackguard, later in his career he regrets is and decides to continue his paladin ways. Can he after he goes with black guard go back into his former career and gain some bonus like a fallen paladin does when he chooses the black guard path.
I was just wondering cause i would like to make a NPC like this

01-12-06, 04:18 PM I dunno. But it seems to me that once fallen AND you go the way of the blackgard, you kinda forgo any right to come back to the wya of the Paladin.

BUT there may be a way to go back to the way of the Paladin.

01-12-06, 04:41 PM Well, in 1st ed. Paladins who lost their way would have to atone and do certain acts to get back in the good grace of their god. I think with a challenging scenario a paladin could do this. I would have him do a quest as a straight fighter and if successful he would be able to resume his paladin class. As far as getting a bonus, no. He should feel lucky just to be let back into his former class. He would also have to go back to the level he was at before taking the path of the Black Guard. No way would he benefit from coming back, he would be lucky to get the level he was origionally at. Aside from that if you deviate from either paladin or black guard, you become a straight fighter.

For game mechanics, you would use the same kind of rule that says a paladin could switch all levels to blackguard, granted he was high enough level. Technically, that's the bonus: to be able to switch the levels entirely or partly. It would make sense to get rid of the level requirement, but most likely it would have to be quite a serious side-quest to get back into the paladin class.

Plus, the new paladin would have to forgo all of the evil blackguard class features.

OR it's possible that you could just make the requirement that to switch back to paladin you have to drop all of the blackguard levels. :eek:

Remember, it's always the DM's discretion :D
