Never having played a Blackguard I didn't realize that his Smite Good ability only used his Class Levels and not his Character Level.

Did I miss something?

Don't know. I think you missed the part of the Paladin where Smite Evil only uses Paladin levels too.

As in: They all work off the level of the class that grants you the smite, not just the blackguard.

No...I didn't miss that part. What I didn't like was the idea of a 20th level Paladin doing twice the smite damage of a 10 Paladin/10 Blackguard. I think the levels should stack in regards to smite...but it's not written that way.

I guess I just believe that the antithesis of a Paladin should do equal damage.

Fine. So you'll dump your Sneak Attack, right?

For as seldom as I'd get to use it...absolutely.

I've always seen a blackguards sneak attack as being quite silly.

The antithesis of the paladin are the variant paladins in Unearthed Arcana.

And if you used basic tactics, like using your fiendish servant or commanded undead to flank things, you'd get much more uses out of sneak attack. Given that just one full attack with nothing but sneaks nets you much more than the +10 damage a paladin gets on a smite over you, it's a pretty good trade-off.

I'm not arguing...it's a very good point.

That, and any Blackguard worth his ranks in Hide is going to revel in his ability to drop foul goodie-goodies just because they didn't see him coming...

"Good Evening, Paladin. Sorry about your friend here...", lets the wizard slide off his sword, "...but don't worry. You're next."

Ah, I see.

Well, given the fact that Blackguards need decent Hide to even get in the class, and that Silent Moves and Shadow can be added to armor without adding to it's total enhancement value, I'm always surprised more people don't realise Blackguards practically scream "Smite them in the back".
