| Donnavin Snowolf04-30-04, 02:00 AM | Blind Blade http://www.jaestudio.com/Ambush.jpg . Kitsu listened to the stream. It was a nice stream. So soft sounding and quiet. She stuck one toe in. Water rushed over it and she yanked it back giggling. "Coh-lduh." . "Very close Kitsu, Cole-de. You must accent the first part, not the second part." Toshimori replied "Try it again, Coal-de." . "Cooohl-duh!" . "I guess it certainly is more fun to say that way." . "HAI!" her squeel made him smile. He patted her head. . "You are still a silly little girl." She nodded vigorously, he could tell because his hand was on her head when she did, not because he could see her. He couldn't. Iwazama Toshimori was blind. . "Tsuki!" . "So the moon is out? Thats pleasant. The air is cooler. Would you like to go back to the house now?" He listened carefully. There was a soft footed padding in the distance. . Please don't come nearer. He thought. . "Hai..." She wrapped her tiny arms around his leg and hugged him the way children do, burying her face in the limb. Toshi patted her head. . "You are a sweet little pixie." Kitsu giggled, she liked pretending to be a pixie. . "Iwa?" . "Yes dear?" She tugged on his pant leg, he could tell she was pointing, this was how she told him. Then she poked his belly button. "Yes, straight ahead, I heard him." She buried her face in his leg again. . "Hello?" he called at the night. . "Rrrrr... mrrrEATS! Rrrrr." . "Leave us be gnoll. Or follow me home, I will feed you there." It sounded like a gnoll's breathing, its speech confirmed it. Toshi listened to the very different silence between danger and confusion. The gnoll was thinking about it. . Kitsu screamed, Toshimori heard a metal object come up, two footsteps, and a leaping cricket. He kicked his front foot out when the gnoll was in reach, it leapt back and he listened to the dogman's fur swishing through the air. His hand flew to his sword handle and drew the weapon smoothly. . "Kitsu! Hide." little feet scampered behind the rock. Padded feet 'thipped' over fallen leaves. Toshi thrust forward as the gnoll's sword whooshed up, and when the cricket landed. . This was followed by a gurgling sound and something liquid spurting Toshi's face. Thick warm liquid ran down the blood groove and the weight one his sword sank to the ground. Iaido withdrew the blade, turned it to his left side and whipped it to the right, completeing his chibiri, the blood flew off. He sheathed his sword. "Kitsu, we should go home now." . "Iwa?" . "Yes Kitsu?" . "Coal-de." . "You are a rare little girl." . "Hai!" she squeeled. Blind Blades are obviously, blind. They attune their other senses, touch, scent, taste, and sound. With their loss it is easier for them to focus on these more often ignored senses. The taste of the air, the smell of flowers and sweat, teeny vibrations in the air. Everything contributes to their awareness of their surroudings. Most Blind Blades are fighters, monks, or barbarians. Rangers and some Paladin also make appearences. Sight is usually too important to Wizards and Rogues. And the Blind Blade is often to oriented on the self for Clerics and Sorceror's just find other ways to see. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Blind Blade is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, and light and medium armor. Appreciation: When one cannot see, yellow is a warm sun, green is the tickling of leaves, purple is the smell of lavender, orange is the taste of a pumpkin, red is blood. The Blind Blade learns to appreciate each sense more, to an extent where many people believe she has a magical sixth sense. Because of their heightened attunement with other senses they gain the ability to identify things by their smell, touch, taste or sound that normal people could not. They must have an encounter with it at least once in some form. So the smell or sound of a gnoll, the taste of a certain poison, the feeling of Oak bark instead of Pine. These are all things that if the Blind Blade spends two full minutes studying they can remember them as well as they could recognize something by sight. Aim: Many people underestimate the blind because they see only the disabilities of blindness and not the advantages. Many small things that go unnoticed by seeing people are taken advantage of by those who cannot. Small sounds betray intent the way visual things do no. Feinting against the Blind Blade suffers a -6 circumstances penalty. Subjects affected by blur or invisibility gain no bonuses against the Blind Blade, and the Blind Blade does not suffer the standard 50% miss chance against invisible creatures. However when one sense is completely removed treat the Blind Blade as though affected by an invisible opponent. Fighter Bonus Feat: Despite their calm nature and seeming distraction with the world. The Blind Blade is still a fighter, first, last, and all throughout. As such they gain a Fighter Bonus Feat from the list at levels 3, 6, and 9. Uncanny Dodge (Dex Bonus to AC): The seeming sixth sense that the Blind Blade aquires through her other senses enables her to avoid danger when least likely. In any situation where her opponent takes up space on the prime material plane the Blind Blade cannot be caught flat footed. Ethereal creatures can still catch the Blind Blade unawares. Focus: "It is a matter of focus when one seeks ascertain something an an unusual manner. To find a penny with your hands you need to focus. To find a squirrel by its sound you need to focus." Normal people focusing can only pull of so many stunts. Blind Blades, when focusing, are capable of much more. They gain their Wis modifier to AC. At 6th level they may use their Wis modifier to attacks instead of Str. Skill without Sight: There are naturally benefits to any situation. Being blind offers the enhancement of senses. However there are still things that are lacking. Ones ability to climb a tree is hampered, or the ability to ride is more dangerous. As such the Blind Blade spends time practicing these things until they can do them again, somewhat normally. The Blind Blade may make a simultanious Concentration check with any of the following abilities the she has ranks in: Climb, Craft, Disable Device, Open Lock, Perform, Ride. The Blind Blade adds 1/2 their Concentration check as an insight bonus to the skill check. To gain the Concentration bonus to these they must focus only on the skill. Thus while climbing they cannot tie a knot. While riding they cannot attack. (example: Fred the Blind Blade decides he wants to ride a horse. He makes a concentration check and a ride check. He gets a 28 on his Concentration check and a 3 on his ride check. So long as he does nothing other than ride his ride check is a 17 (half of 28 plus 3). Directed Focus: To simply focus is not enough, you must focus at something. A state of focus without a target of focus is like fire with no fuel, it cannot last long. It is a challenge, in the least for a blind person to strike something that magically moves. But there are signs. The inflow of air when an object is removed from a space, the displacement of air when they reappear. When fighting an opponent that has the ability to blink or teleport frequently the Blind Blade does not lose track of their foe, although they still suffer the percent chance to miss. Better than Eyes: It could be said that being sightless is a gift. External views do not conflict with your personal choices. Sight does not impede judgement. Therefor little escapes the 'view of a blind man'. The Blind Blade gains Blind Sight 30 feet. In addition they act as though always under the effects of see invisibilty. |

Though, no Hide with Move Silently, means no one will ever take MS, though I understand why hide isn't there, from a flavour standpoint. The will save jumps all over the place. Also, from what I can tell, FOR and REF are supposed to be poor, in which case they should end on +3, and WIL should end on +7. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Blind Blade is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, and light and medium armor. Personally, I would just put "No Additional Proficiencies" here, but to each their own. Pretty much everyone taking this class will have these anyway though. Nice bit of flavour. Aim: Many people underestimate the blind because they see only the disabilities of blindness and not the advantages. Many small things that go unnoticed by seeing people are taken advantage of by those who cannot. Small sounds betray intent the way visual things do no. Bluff attempts, both for combat and lies, suffer a -6 against the Blind Blade. Subjects affected by blur or invisibility gain no bonuses against the Blind Blade, and the Blind Blade does not suffer the standard 50% miss chance against invisible creatures. However when one sense is completely removed treat the Blind Blade as though affected by an invisible opponent. I'd take out the bluff check for lying, and have it apply only to combat bluffing. True seeing with a humongous penalty...works for me. Fighter Bonus Feat: Despite their calm nature and seeming distraction with the world. The Blind Blade is still a fighter, first, last, and all throughout. As such they gain a Fighter Bonus Feat from the list at levels 3, 6, and 9. Personally, I would leave out the fighter bonus feats. Okeedokee. They gain their Wis bonus to AC. So...they gain their Wis bonus to AC at all times, or only after a certain amount of time using the concentration skill? The flavour text is throwing me off here. The Blind Blade may use half her Concentration score to add to any of the following skills. Climb, Craft, Disable Device, Open Lock, Perform, Ride. If the Blind Blade has no ranks in these skills they may not use this ability in relation to them. To gain the Concentration bonus to these they must focus only on the skill. Thus while climbing they cannot tie a knot. While riding they cannot attack. So they just gain a bonus, or is there a listed penalty, which the concentration check helps get rid of? Directed Focus: To simply focus is not enough, you must focus at something. A state of focus without a target of focus is like fire with no fuel, it cannot last long. It is a challenge, in the least for a blind person to strike something that magically moves. But there are signs. The inflow of air when an object is removed from a space, the displacement of air when they reappear. When fighting an opponent that has the ability to blink or teleport frequently the Blind Blade does not lose track of their foe, although they still suffer the percent chance to miss. Okay. Hmm...alright, but the "Always under effect of See Invisibility" seems a bit redundant with Blind Sight and the "Aim" clas ability. Overall, a very flavourful class. I likes alot. Might even have to steal for my campaign. :) Oh yeah, and.... Wow. :D |
| Donnavin Snowolf05-01-04, 10:53 PM | Thanks for spotting the saves. Usually I use non-standard saves because they just make more sense to me. I've always thought there should be a "middle save". Anyway when I copied it over from my other format I didn't edit the saves all the way . Woah...lots of feats to get in...pretty much the only way you can qualify and still be able to be in this class for 10 levels is to be a fighter. To my shame, looking at it only 2 of those are fighter bonus feats. I'll drop lightning reflexes. And I do want it to be a mostly fighter class. As for Listen (even though you didn't mention it) I'm hoping DMs would be kind enough to grant listen as a permanent class skill to the blind person. Because all you've got left are touch and hearing. I mean, you can try scent and taste, but you're in for nasty suprises that way Personally, I would just put "No Additional Proficiencies" here, but to each their own. Pretty much everyone taking this class will have these anyway though. You gotta watch out for that wacky sorcerer. I'd take out the bluff check for lying, and have it apply only to combat bluffing. True seeing with a humongous penalty...works for me. Changed it to combat bluffing. Its no more true seeing than regularily being blinded. No reason a person that can't see should be affected by a blurry visual. The real bonus from this ability is not suffering the 50% miss chance against invisible creatures (because the rules state that if something is blind treat all creatures as invisible.) So...they gain their Wis bonus to AC at all times All the time, just like a monk. So they just gain a bonus, or is there a listed penalty, which the concentration check helps get rid of? Hopefully cleared that up. Hmm...alright, but the "Always under effect of See Invisibility" seems a bit redundant with Blind Sight and the "Aim" clas ability. I figure its worth saying twice :D |

| LoneTear05-05-04, 10:43 AM | Beautiful. What about allow the Blind Blade to use DEXTERITY OR WISDOM for Attack Rolls instead of strength (introducing the "weapon of choice" option? I think that a blind warrior will focus on learn a single weapon to its perfection, instead of wasting time in make practice with different weapons)? This should indicate the focus on precision (Dexterity) OR insight (Wisdom) that a life of blindness impose (I' m more oriented to the Wisdom version, even if, somehow, I associate a blined-man fighting style with precision and dexterity over stength). Great Job |
| Donnavin Snowolf05-05-04, 11:03 AM | thats a very good idea. |
| LoneTear05-05-04, 11:09 AM | Thx. I suggest you to put this class feature between 1st and 3rd level (perhaps instead of the first bonus feat?). I leave the wording to you, especially for the Weapon of Choice option (if you' re going to use it), cuz my english really sux. |
| LoneTear05-05-04, 11:16 AM | Oh, another thing: perhaps you can reduce the HD to d8 (this is a evasive-styled fighter instead of a tank-styled one, I think. Ideally he should AVOID all those hits with which he is going to "roll-with" with great difficulty) and increase the Will save to GOOD (I really think that a person needs a GREAT amount of will to follow this PrC; What about Iron Will as a required feat OR a minimum (base) Will save as a requirement?) Here is your class the way I see it: Blind Blade (BlB) Blind blades are obviously, blind. They attune their other senses, touch, scent, taste, and sound. With their loss it is easier for them to focus on these more often ignored senses. The taste of the air, the smell of flowers and sweat, teeny vibrations in the air. Feats: Alertness, blind-fight, combat reflexes, skill focus: listen, weapon focus (any melee weapon). Skills: Listen 9 ranks. Will Save: +4 or greater. Special: Subject must be permanently blinded. Class Skills The blind blade class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Balance (Dex), Concentration (Con), Innuendo (Int), Jump (Str), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Speak Language. Spot (Wis) is forbidden and cannot be increased. Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier. Class Features All of the following are class features of the blind blade class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The blind blade is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, and light and medium armor. These are all things that if the blind blade spends two full minutes studying they can remember them as well as they could recognize something by sight. One weapon, one mind (Ex): When you cannot see your enemies, focus, intuition and precision becomes more important than brute strength. At 1st level, a blind blade must choose a kind of weapon she has the weapon focus feat with (for example: katana). Whenever she wields the chosen kind of weapon, she can use her Wis (or Dex?) modifier instead of Str modifier for all attack rolls. Aim (Ex): Many people underestimate the blind because they see only the disabilities of blindness and not the advantages. Many small things that go unnoticed by seeing people are taken advantage of by those who cannot. Small sounds betray intent the way visual things do no. Feinting against the blind blade suffers a -6 circumstances penalty. | Lady Ishtar05-05-04, 07:02 PM | perhaps give them blindsense at 1ts level, kind of a build up to Better than Eyes. than at 2nd level you get Aim, which is superior to blindsense, but seems to me like its usable only in combat. |

Most of the PrCs (Iaijutsu Master?) which give you the option to use another ability bonus instead of str bonus, do this in the first levels. |

| Donnavin Snowolf05-06-04, 10:42 PM | The required base will save of +4 is from Lone Tears version. perhaps give them blindsense at 1ts level, kind of a build up to Better than Eyes. than at 2nd level you get Aim, which is superior to blindsense, but seems to me like its usable only in combat. Aim is supposed to be more useful out of combat than in. Its essentially overcoming the inability to recognize things without visual confirmation. Like the difference between your bedroll and haybale. |
