Bloodmaiden Supreme of Haela Brightaxe

Haela Brightaxe is a dwarven goddess. Dwarven gods are strict, fair and law-abiding. Every one knows that. Even the stupidest of orcs.
Which is why people are truely surprised when the meet one of the "true" kaxanar (dwarven for Bloodmaiden).

Haela Brightaxe (Hay-la Brightaxe) is the dwarven goddesss of luck in battle, joy in battle...and dwarven barbarians.
All of her priests are called kaxanar, including the male ones (and no, they are not derided. Few are willing to deride an angry warrior-priest covered in galons of fresh blood). While Haela Brightaxe accepts both male and female clerics, an elit sisterhood in her church is female only- the Bloodmaidens Supereme.

The Bloodmaidens Supereme are truelly mighty combatents: they can cast a small amout of spells, they can enter horrible frenzies, they are quite lucky... and they usually travel with likeminded individuals (especially battleragers). The favored tactic of all Bloodmaidens Supereme is simple- find the largest concentration of enemies and CHARGE!

This PrC is always taken by females with at least some levels of cleric and barbarian. After the Clr\Brb, the only other combination found in any number in the sisterhood is Clr\Brb\Ftr. However, in a chaotic church of a chaotic deity, any combination is possible.

HD: d12

Req.s:
BAB: +6
Skills: Knowledge (Religion) 6 ranks.
Feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Weapon Focus (Greatsword).
Spell Casting: Able to cast 2nd level divine spells.
Patron: Haela Brightaxe.
Race: Dwarf (no duergar or derro).
Gender: Female.
Alignment: CG.
Special: Ablity to rage, ability to turn undead, admission into the sisterhood (see below).

Skills: Climb, Craft, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Intuit Direction, Jump,Knowledge (Religion), Listen, Ride, Swim, Wilderness Lore.

BAB Fort Ref Will Abilities
1. +1 +2 +0 +0 Rage 1\day, Tatoo
2. +2 +3 +0 +0
3. +3 +3 +1 +1 Haela's Blessing
4. +4 +4 +1 +1 CHARGE!
5. +5 +4 +1 +1 Rage 2/day
6. +6 +5 +2 +2
7. +7 +5 +2 +2 Bloodfest
8. +8 +6 +2 +2 "Strategic" Charge
9. +9 +6 +3 +3 Haela's Smile
10.+10 +7 +3 +3 Rage 3/day, Haela's Caress

Rage: Just like the barbarian ability. Add to the number in the table to the amount of rages of the Bloodmaiden Supreme.

Tatoo: Admission into the church requires tatooing. Admission into the sisterhood requires even *more* tatooing, causing members of the sisterhood look like a walking painting. Tatoos range from weapons (especialy the Greatsword-in-flames motif), abstracts, geometric designs to everything (including profanities, geneological lists and favourite ales). This gives the members of the sisterhood fearsome appearence- they gain a +2 on all Intimidate checks.

Haela Blessing: At third level Haela gives the Bloodmaiden Supreme a special gift- as a free action the Bloodmaiden Supreme may sacrifice 2 Turn attempts and gain +2 divine bonus on her next attack roll. If she hits, she deals another 2d4 points of damage. She may do so as many times as she has enough Turn attempts, but no more then once with each strike. This ability can be used only when raging.

CHARGE!: Bloodmaiden Supreme's favourite tactic is to charge. At forth level she is so trained in her favourite manouver she is nearly unstopable. When enraged, and only once per rage, she may CHARGE!. This is a regular charge attack, but the Bloodmaiden Supreme must run at least 10 feet. If she hits, she deals double damage.

Bloodfest: The Bloodmaiden Supreme loves and lives for combat. The more, the merrier. At 7th level, this attitude manifests as the Bloodfest- called so because of the vast amouts of blood spilled in this unique manouver. Whenever a Bloodmaiden Supreme of 7th level (or higher) scores a critical hit, she is intitled immidiatly to another (free) attack on that enemy. However, since such quick strikes wreck havoc on the Bloodmaiden Supreme's balance, she gains a -2 to all attack rolls and AC after that attack, untill the begining of her next turn.

"Strategic" Charge: The sisterhood has an... odd approach to strategy. They believe it is another word for "Charge!". However, they often fight side-to-side with followers of Clangaddin Silverbeard. For such occasion, they are trained in the Strategic Charge. (This takes a bit of explanation: The two churches unite only when a threat is near. This threat is usually orcs. Whenever such a thing happens, all the leaders of the community sit down to devise a strategy, assigning each group an area to defend or attack. The Bloodmaidens Supreme always feel they do not get enough orcs, and that others get the orcs they rightfuly deserve. Thus, they have developed a method of getting all the orcs they can) Once per day, while using her CHARGE! ability, the Bloodmaiden Supreme may attempt a Bull rush as a free action if she hits. This provokes no AoO. If she succedes and moves more than 5 feet, she may attack another enemy that is now in melee range (example: a Bloodmaiden Supreme chrges the first line of an orcish unit. She hits on orc, and shoves him as she run forward. She moved him 10 feet, and now has many new targets to attack. She chooses one in random, and strikes him).

Haela Smile: Thrice per day a Bloodmaiden Supreme of 9th level or higher may call upon Haela's grace in combat. As a free action, she may grant herself a bonus to one of the following: attack rolls, damage rolls, AC. This bonus equals her Wisdom modifier and lasts for 1 round per class level. Activating this ability costs 3 Turning attempts, and it can be done to a maximum of 3 times per day- channeling such amounts of divine energy is dangerous.

Haela Caress: Dwarven battleragers believe that if they die in battle, they will be reborn as even better fighters. The best of the Bloodmaidens Supreme knows that Haela is reluctant to let them die at all- once per day, when a Bloodmaiden Supreme reaches 0 HP or below she is immidiatly subject to a Cure Critical Wounds, cast at 10th caster level.

Should I take that as a "yes" or as a "We don't care, now bugger off"?

To be blunt, the PrC's on the strong side. Comparisons show this nicely.

It's a fighting class, with the most similarities to the barbarian, so we'll compare it to a barbarian.

When you take the class instead of barbarian, you lose:
1. Uncanny Dodge further advancement (Ooo + vs traps... whoop-de-do... ;) )
2. Greater Rage
3. Maybe skill points (ya forgot how many they get per level)
4. Damage Reduction

You gain:
1. A good will save
2. Intimidate bonus
3. Immunity to fear
4. Attack and damage bonus (Haela's Blessing, at the cost of turning attempts? Heaven forbid! ;) )
5. 2X Damage 1/day
6. 2 bonus feats (Great Cleave and Weapon Specialization, which is usually fighter exclusive)
7. More painful criticals (to both combatants)
8. More damage when charging
9. At least a +2 bonus to something 3/day
10. Increased survival chances (Hey, I just almost died, perhaps I'd serve my goddess better if I charged the other direction! ;) )

Yeah... I think that demonstrates the power pretty well...

Anyways, and while you miss out on a little BAB, HPs, and skill points when you have to take (3) cleric levels, it's nothing compared to the benefits one would gain by taking the class.

So, um, yeah, the class is overpowered, but I like the abilities and whatnot, I'm just not sure how I'd recommend tuning them down. Perhaps simply making the BAB like a cleric's... I mean, they get enough attack and damage bonuses from the abilities anyways.

Hmm.
Blunt is good (as long as it is tempered with humor- I laughed out loud at 10!).

Hmm, I am greatly reluctent to lower the BAB.

How about lowering the HD to d10 and the Will save to low?

Also, they get 4 skill points per level.

Thanks!

Alright then, let's see what we can do...

I'd keep the hit dice the way they are, any berserker needs lots of HPs to compensate for all the times they're taking a beating while raging.

Yeah, you could drop the good Will save, considering that Will saves seem to indicate something a little more than determination (based on the logic that normal barbarians don't get it, while bards do? Something's would have to be amiss).

Are you really hooked on the skills? Personally, I'd make them more cleric/fighter-y (less wilderness lore stuff), and give them 2 + Int mod. skill points per level.

Leaving no ability untouched! :D

Tattoo: Oh fine, I lied. I won't touch this one.

No fear: Why? Sure, every warrior would like to be the bravest of the brave, but why give the ability? I mean, if they've already got a +2 to will saves while they're raging, why not just let that cover it?

Haela's Blessing: Ah ha! How about limiting it to only while the Bloodmaiden is raging? That cuts the power a bit more, while putting focus on the whole screaming-bloodlusting-kill-happy rager that the bloodmaiden is.

Great Cleave and Weapon Spec.: Since we're trying to trim the power, how about simply dropping the bonus feats? Makes the class not step on the fighter's toes.

Bloodfest: So sue me, I'm a liar! This one's fine too.

Strategic Charge: I like this ability too much to change it... :D Although, I would put parenthesis around the "Strategic" in the title.

Haela's Smile: How about instead of 3/day, making it cost 3 turning attempts? Puts a little more of a restriction on it.

Haela's Caress: My only concern is that a 20th level Cure Critical Wounds can heal a good chunk of health. If you simply want the ability to give the character a chance to reconsider fighting to the death, the large amount of healing may not be required. Consider making it a Cure Serious Wounds, at 10th level, or something like that.

Other ways to limit the power could be to have any ability that you had to spend turning attempts on (Haela's Blessing and Haela's Smile) take standard or move-equivalent actions, rather than free actions.

---------

Anyways, those are my current suggestions, take what ya like, twist what ya kinda like, and dump that which ya hate.

:behold:

Well, is this OK?

Should it be changed for 3.5?

looks good. a very cool dwarf PrC, and for female dwarves at that!
i think i'll have to convert it to a sisterhood of Moradin's or Kord's priestess's so they can be NPC's in my campaign.
great job Savras!

Thanks, trashdog!

If you use it, have fun.
If it turn out to be unbalanced, keep that info for yourself! :P

One thing is bugging me.... it's the Bloodmaiden Supreme of Haela BrightAXE, yet it requires weapon focus in the greatSWORD.

See what I'm getting at?

Well, the goddess's name is Haela Brightaxe and her favoured weapon and symbol are a greatsword.

Blame FR design team...

Savras

P.S.: While you're at it, why is Tyr's Symbol Hammer but his favoured weapon is Long Sword?

Edit: Oh, and Tempus's symbol is a sword, but his weapon is an axe...

FR design team is very... creative.
At times, overly so.
