Ok, so I am a monk in a game that has a great story but doesn't make a lot of room for personal RPing and stories (some but not much) and before I knew this I decided to try out the monk. Now after a 15+ game days I am bored out of my mind. A monk if so boring to play if you don't have allot of room to make them with an interesting character. They can't hit hard, they can't use powers and I am bored stupid... My DM, who over all is a good guy and great story teller, won't let me go into a class/PrC that he hasn't heard of so I got nothing.... I am currently level 7 and am concerned that if I multi class (say into a cleric or wizard) that I will quickly get left behind by the rest of the party... tough I am starting to feel that way anyways.... Any ideas?:pbbbtt:

If you have the campaign setting of Ebberon, there are a few nice feats in there that give a monk alot more flavour. for example, a monk can use a long sword, with flurry of blows and gains prof in it with one feat. If you are bored of battles, then try picking up a reach weapon (another feat identical to the longsword) and go and kick the **** out of spll caster (especially wizards). move up to them and use unarmed strike with like a foot or knee or somthing. if they move back to cast a spell, hit them with reach weapon. If they stay put to cast a spell, puch them with unarmed strike. If they move more than 5ft step, punch them with unarmed strike. In ToB, there is a feat that improves your unarmed damage by four monk levels. same thing with monks belt.soon enough that 1d10 is now 2d10. just think of yourself as the anti mage :)

You shouldn't be lacking for options if you have access to books like the ToB and the Completes.

Start taking levels of Swordsage. Take a level or 3 of cleric and go into Sacred Fist, or go the other way with Eldritch Fist. Pious Templar is a great pick up for a Monk that wants to improve his survivability.

Radical Taoist's builds (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=345741) have a few monk combos that will make heads explode. Wade in and have some :plotting: fun.

maybe you should post your stats/feats/skills so we have a better idea of what we're working with.

but maybe multiclass and and take one of the ascetic whatever feats from complete adventurer. ascetic rogue, or ascetic hunter, for instance. ascetic mage even, if you somehow managed to have a good charisma.

Fist of Zuoken (XPH) is a monk PrC that lacks outright abilities, but the ability to use Psychic Warrior powers makes up for this. Each level of FoZ counts as one for determining Unarmed Damage, AC bonus, and speed bonus. Just imagine becoming a huge monk (with agumented expansion) and dishing out 6D8 damage per hit, plus all the Pychic Warrior powers that can enhance natural weapons.

For lack of other ideas, check Oriental Adventures. that's got several PrC's that will work, all of which you can freely multi-class with.

Step 1: Get your hands on The Tome Of Battle: The Book Of Nine Swords

Step 2: Ask your DM if you can retrain some of your Monk levels into Swordsage levels. Wether he says yes or no, take only Swordsage levels from now on.

Step 3: Have fun.

Have you tried focusing on out of combat abilities? I mean, I know the Monk is a combat class, but it has a lot of potential.
If I had to select something to jazz up your monk, Drunken Master would add a whole bunch of spice to your kung-fu kid.

Boring to play?

Even when a monk is down and dying frequently due to low HP... it's hardly boring.

Even just using the PHB, you should never be bored.

Monks must think outside of the box. DON'T restrict yourself to toe-to-toe fighting. Use your movement, use your feats.

And out of combat? You OWN the fighter-types. Sneak along with the rogue, out-distance the barbarian, out-climb/jump/swim everyone.

Explore the class my friend.

There is actually a way to get Dex, Con, Int, and Wis to AC. It takes monk, one of the classes out of ToB, and Fist of the Forest from the Complete Champion.

should have been a dwarven monk, taking ten lvls of monk and then going into dwarven defender, would have been hard to kill to say the least and a pretty heavy hitter. Rp wise you'd have the must fun being a monk and trying to balance that with typical dwarven behavior lol...

Well, you could do what I did when I was playing a monk that I got tired of. Get him killed... alot. Most DM's will let you make another character, so long as you don't make it look like you did it on purpose.

ToB is out....already asked... mostly because my DM has said no to anything he hasn't already read. This is the same for most of orential adventures....

I have seriously thought about trying to get him killed but the group I play with dosn't absorb new characters very well.... lack of trust and such.

I will be posting most of my stats later tonight when I have my character sheet in front of me but I can tell you I am lvl 6 LN monk.

Finally as a note I am trying to take my character towards the darker side of life even to leaving the monk lifestyle because of recent events...
thanks for all the help!

Perhaps try taking levels in one of these three PrCs:

1. Shou Disciple // found in a FR source book called Unapproachable East.

2. Animal Shen // found in Dragon Magazine issue 319 (May 2004, Warriors of the Animal Fist).

3. Budoken // found here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=751039 -- My own creation.

4. Check out the 'Kung Fu Compendium' // found here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=758520.

Sorry if i'm only repeating any of what other's have already suggested.

Hope it helps some!

Well, if you just want some special powers you could try Tattooed Monk from Complete Warrior, it's not the best class, but you get some special abilities and your DM is likely to allow it.
