First off, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I checked enough to make my eyes bleed. :weep:

Anyways,

Picked up D&D again after many years, and decided I wanted to try a Necromancer, however, I'm quite stumped on progression.

Rules:

Can only multi-class into 3 classes. PERIOD. Prestige or otherwise.

Only book he said was off-limits was Savage Species(He says it's quite broken).

Core races

Was flipping through books and the True Necromancer looked interesting, and it fits into the 3 class rule: wizard/cleric/TN.

So I started a 1st level Wizard with Improved Init and Collegiate Wizard(Complete Arcane), but where do I go from there?

All comments welcome!

Wizard (Necromancer) 3/Cleric (Make sure to grab the Death domain) 3/True Necromancer 14. Nice, lovely horde of undead at your beck and call. No 9th level spells, but you get 8th in both classes. And you are one hell of a necromancer.

Alternatively, Wizard (necromancer) 6/Pale Master 10/Lich 4

there might be a way to get the true necromancer prestige class earlier than possible with other classes
the generic spellcaster gets both divine and arcane spells at the same time, but is pretty weak in every other aspect, if you pick up this class, then somehow get the death domain you might be able to get the true necro earlier than otherwise
again i dont have the books in front of me, so i cant confirm it.
it also would kinda be screwing multiclassing between a generic class and a prestige class.

3 levels wizard->1 level cleric
then get a scroll of imbue spell to meet divine spellcasting requirement

and enter true necromancer at level 5 instead of 7

You can't honestly believe that [i]imbue spell[i] allows you to qualify for PrC's!?!?!?!

/shrug, not saying i do, merely posting it cause its a "loophole" i have heard used in many peoples build on these boards. personally its too sketchy for me andi wouldn't use it, but there are many who would and do, so i'm merely presenting the possibility so that Xaktsaroth may decide for himself if he thinks its a fair viable option(or more importantly whether his DM will allow it)

oh and btw to close italics you type /i in the brackets not just i again

Uh, no DM in his right mind would let that go down. That's not a loophole so much as a blatant rewrite of the rules. I like to find better ways to do things as much as the next guy, but that is insane.

like i said, i wouldnt use it and am only posting it as a possible option should he like it. theres no need for you to go on rant about whether any "DM in his right mind" would allow it, thats irrelevent. the point is the poster who originated this thread can decide for himself without people trying to bash the idea just because you don't like it.

and ill say one more time: I WOULDN'T USE IT, IM POSTING IT BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE WOULD AND I AM MERELY SHOWING A POSSIBLE OPTION

This doesnt work.. YOu cannot be a TN 14 without being 24th level. Usually TNs tend to go Wizard (Necromancer)3/Cleric 7/TN 10 although some tend to be Wiz 5/Clr 5/TN 10 or Wiz 7/Clr 3/TN 10.

Edit: BTW, how is Kisanth doing Xak Tsaroth lololol. How is she handling a tonne of rubble on her head and holy burns?

Um, actually, True Necromancer is a 14 level prestige class. Pick up Libris Mortis and look at it. Then get back to me.

Errrr.

That wrong. TN is a 14 level PrC. Unless I missed something, you can take all 14 levels before Epic. It has BAB and saves for all 14 levels. It just has a funny number of levels. Like Initiate of the Seven Fold Veil being 7 levels long

Bah. Bah I say at you all again.

TN is just one of many ways to make powerful necromancers. I am personally fond of Red Wizard, as it makes your "save or die" spells that-much-more evil.

I would also avoid litching until you reach a time when you might die of old age. It isn't worth it to give up your spellcasting progression.

lol my mistake. I had to hunt through my obscure Dnd sourcebooks to find that the 3.5 version of True Necromancer is 14th level instead of 10th level.... Libris Mortis no less. I was quoting the old 3.0 version and assumed that the 3.5 version was the same number of levels since I havent read all that Libris Mortis had to offer lololol.

I have so many books that its hard to keep track of my references lol (something like 10 to 15 3.5 books plus a bunch of 3.0 books too).

Ignore my previous post it was in error.

I doubt that would fly. My DM is very anti-Munchkin, hence the 3 class only rule :P

wizard 3/Cleric 3/TN 14 sounds good. Any advice on feats?

What kind of necro are you building? Undead Slayer? Reaper of the Living? Fear God? Anatomist? Animator? Ghostmaker? Necropolitan? There is alot of room for specialization here. Each has a solid list of feats I'd recommend. *grins* As I'm obviously going to be asked to explain...

Undead Slayers=vampire hunters, etc. They hunt undead, and put them down.

Reaper of the Living=They bring things like Power Word: Kill and Finger of Death to the table. Combat necros.

Fear God=specializing in fear effects, some also branch into shadow magic.

Anatomist=specializing in healing, and knowledge of surgery. Lots of healing magic and anatomical kills(cancer magic, heart ripper, horrid wilting)

Animator=traditional maker of corporeal undead. Zombie factory.

Ghostmaker=creates mostly incorporeal undead, usually very stealthy, great spy/assassin.

Necropolitan=undead negotiations. Dirgist and other classes help. Need someone to socially finesse a mummy, lich or vampire? Here's your man.

Of course, each has their own specialized skills, and prestige classes for that matter. I also recommend picking up Sword and Sorcery's Hollowfaust: City of Necromancers and D&D2E's Complete Book of Necromancers for plenty of flavor and good thoughtful input on character concepts. Their work on the subject is solid. Avoid Mongoose's Necromancy: Beyond the Pale like it was infested with airborne AIDS.

Reposted from another thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=322425) in the Character Optimization forum: Here is a thread about the True Necro and the best way to build one: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=322425

I snagged a build from there by Crimson Ryoko that uses the Cloistered Cleric and Necro variant for an NPC of mine. I changed it a bit and wound up going with this:

Human
Cloistered Cleric 3 - Death, Deathbound Domains
Necromancer Variant 3 - Undead Boost
True Necromancer 14

FlawFeat1: Necromantic Presence
FlawFeat1: Necromantic Might
HumanFeat1: Practiced Spellcaster: Cleric
Feat1: Corpsecrafter
Feat3: Graveborn Expert (Dragon, mindless undead gain 1 feat)
Feat6: Spell Focus - Necromacy
Feat9: Destruction Retribution
Feat12: Nimble Bones
Feat15: Mother Cyst
Feat18: Turn Resistance (if she becomes undead) or Fell Animate or Profane Boost (Complete Divine, spend Rebuke attempt to maximize any Inflict spell cast w/in 1 round)With the Rod of Undead Mastery from Libris Mortis, she can control 180-220 HD of undead made via Animate Dead at character level 16, and they're all a LOT tougher than normal undead of their type.

A solid animator/reaper/anatomist. I like. Personally, I'd have practiced spellcaster for both classes. Mother cyst is a sick feat, but nice if you're going for a really nasty reaper/anatomist. Powerful nasty.

Ok, Cloistered Cleric stuff is in UA, right?

Necromancer variant 3? Is that UA too?

Flawed? Ok, what the heck is that?! :P

All is UA, which I find to be personally not balanced. Flaws are essentially "penalty feats" you take at 1st level to give yourself a bonus feat of your choice. The problem is the munchkins who will take a "flaw" that will never really come into play and then get a free feat from it. For instance, a monk might take the "shaky" flaw which gives a penalty to ranged attacks. Then he'll take some feat like Improved Initiative or whatever. A person is only allowed to select 2 flaws.

I can't help you on the Necromancer but I just wanted to say something.

Only book he said was off-limits was Savage Species(He says it's quite broken).

IMO, he is wrong. SS was written for 3.0 but if you stat out the monster abilities as a class instead of allowing them as templates then a player has to give up levels in CORE classes (which are better, IMO) in order to take the monster levels. For some monsters you are giving up a significant amount of power, IMHO, in order to progess in monster levels. You are getting the ability to play a monster from the MM (or others as approved by the DM) but all the monsters abilities and stat increases are spread out among the monster levels. OH, and only the monsters allowed would be up to the DM anyway so he can take the "broken" monsters away from the ones the players can choose from.

There is something broken in every book even WOTC "COMPLETE" books, especially them IMO.

Give SS a read and make your own decision. I know this won't change your DMs mind but my hope is that you are able to make your own opinion and not on your DM's opinion. His opinion may be slanted because he doesn't like monsters or something. ;)
