| sooperspook01-09-06, 07:27 PM | There are a couple of , what I like to call, semi-spontaneous casters(SsC) that WoTC has put out recently. War-wizard and Dread Necromancer. I for one, would like to see more casters in this mold. They are what sorcerers probably should have been. Very flexible within a narrow range (as odd as that sounds). So I propose we design a few of our own versions. So lets brainstorm some ideas on what themes we can come up with and we can further flesh them out on different threads(or even this one). To make things easier , here are a few characteristics of semi-spontaneous casters I extrapolated from our current official 2. 1: Semi spontaneous casting - The SsC casts spells spontaneously, without having to memorize any before hand. He does not have a spells known list, instead he automatically knows every spell on his list of a level that he can cast. 2: Restricted theme - The SsC has a very restricted spell list in that it must follow a particular theme , which the SsC is built around. eg War wizard is built around combat spells and has few noncombat, non direct damage spells. 3: Limited ability to learn new spells - The SsC may add spells to his spell list only every few levels or so. Furthermore, he is restricted to certain schools. eg. Dread Necromancer may only add a necromantic spell every 4th lvl. 4: Special abilities - The SsC has numerous special abilities that tie in with the general theme. Alternatively he may have only a few abilities but gains more uses out of them as he increases in level. 5: Tougher - The SsC tends to be tougher than a normal wizard or sorcerer, having higher hit dice. Just how much higher depends on how martial the SsC is. 6: Full caster - The SsC is a full caster. That is to say he gains a caster level at every level and may eventually gain 9th level spells. Right. Within these boundaries, what can we come up with? Some ideas of my own. A Summoner: Someone who deals almost exclusively with summoned creatures. A Transfomer : Someone who mostly uses shapechanging magics. An Elementalist: Someone who only uses elemental spells( but is not limited to just one). Anyone else? Lets get those creative juices flowing! :) |

Don't just limit it to protection spells or counter spelling type stuff. How about importing some things like re-direct teleport and such. I think that using a spell theif (except not sneak attacking) where you absorb the magical energies and either use them to power your spells or just recast it yourself could be awsome. What would you call that? |
| Feor01-09-06, 08:41 PM | Abjuration is wards & protection spells, along with things like Atone and Dispel. More like the ultimate defensive caster than someone redirecting spells and stealing magical power. This the one wizard who can wade into melee and start boxing the Ogre without taking a hit. :P I'd say the natural way is just to make one class for each school of Magic. The War-Mage fits this under the Evocation class. The others should be fairly obvious (even if names are iffy): Abjuration - Shieldmage Conjuration - Summoner Divination - Magescryer etc. etc. |
| sooperspook01-09-06, 09:41 PM | Hmm a specialist in negating/manipulating others magic ? Is that what you meant? Could call him a Spellweaver (unravels anothers magic and reweaves it to his taste). I like that theme though. As for basing it on schools..mmmmmaybe.. Personally I'd prefer non school based themes. War wizard got evocations because thats the best direct damage school and that is what they focus on. Dread Necromancer got necromancy because they focus on death and undeath. An elementalist wouldnt be school restricted because it would be based on his spells either having the [element] descriptor or that deals with a particular element. What about someone focused on Dragon magic? Or Demonic magic?(not simply summoning but using the magic themselves) Or a Traveller? someone who uses his magic to access places no one else could dream of? |

Kinda a hard class to define, maybe not such a good choice. We could also make Mages for all of the sub elements, like Bone, Metal and the like. You could also have Mages that focus on peticular weapons. Essentially all of their spells are cast through their weapons, like the Dagger Spell mages but make the weapon scope broader by forcing the player to select a type of weapon (Poleare, Sword, Axe, Hammer, etc.) or perhaps a type of damage (Slashing, Piercing, Bludge., etc.). Idealy the spells would be focused on self buffs (both to Weapon and Weilder), touch evocation spells and ability draining spells. You could also have Mages that focus on getting hurt to cast spells. Call it a Retribution Mage. It focuses on hurting creatures/people that harm it. I have no idea where to go with that but just putting the idea out there really. |
| sooperspook01-10-06, 11:46 PM | Another idea i had. A Spirittalker - Someone who communicates with and deals with incorpreal dead/undead and their abilities. Edit: Yet more ideas :) Grey Sage - specialises in shadow and darkness magics Erudite Cabalist - seeker of obscure lore and hidden knowledge(im thinking mostly divination type spells and maybe the special ability to use any scroll) Creator(needs a better name) - creates things out of nothing (non living) also some ability to manipulate/destroy inannimate or non living things. Ok. Does anyone want to start fleshing these ideas out? Shall we take one each, put in a different thread? If so, I'll link them here. |
