| thecasualoblivion04-08-07, 09:37 PM | After reading all the spellcasters > fighting classes threads I'm inclined to give fighters 1 feat per level, and other fighting classes either the fighter feat progression or a pre-made set. It'd complicate NPCs, but I'm good at dealing with that. |
| Alpha_Moose04-08-07, 09:44 PM | That in general won't help. The problem isn't less abilities (well, it's not the biggest problem), it's lack of scalable abilities. The best spell far out-weighs the best feat. This is something that ToB tried to fix, to give martial characters scalable abilities. |
| thecasualoblivion04-08-07, 09:51 PM | Its not really a question of fixing anything. Its just a question of being able to do that without really having an effect on the game. I'm planning on doing other things to even the score, but that is something I can do to give physical classes a little extra oomph and be simple to implement. As a bonus, since its fairly universal, it doesn't unbalance the classes against each other. |
| Alpha_Moose04-08-07, 09:58 PM | Oh, well, I dunno then. It probably would have an effect in game, making Fighters not too powerful but too much... stuff. It's like having a lot of +1 swords instead of one +5 sword. On a big other note, most of this is a general balance issue that you don't have to even take into account in your own games. If you see that fighters are just outclasses in your own games then go for it, but if it's just because of stuff from the boards, don't. It may end up causing more problems than it fixes. |
| thecasualoblivion04-08-07, 10:10 PM | Trying to balance the classes is a philosophical exercise as much as something I'm actually hoping will affect game play. Like these boards. One of the other unmentioned reasons for this is a desire to let the Fighter class specialize in something, while still getting versatility/handle any combat situation. They can't do that under the current system. The simple/blunt way to do this is to just pile on more feats. To balance out the other fighting classes, I just give them more feats as well. It is a case of more stuff, but I like more stuff. The biggest drawback is the extra mess building NPCs, but I'm prepared to deal with that. |
| Alpha_Moose04-08-07, 10:15 PM | I'd almost suggest that you get Tome of Battle. Some hate it, others love it. I like it a lot personally. I'd suggest looking though it at your local store to see if it's something that you like (on the other hand you may not want to buy a new book). Or look though the boards to find some other threads about it. |
| thecasualoblivion04-08-07, 10:19 PM | Already use that. Another reason for giving non-tome of battle classes more "stuff". |

Oh, then maybe give all non-ToB martial classes the option to take maneuvers or give them some maneuvers. Examples are the Martial (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=752414)and Ranger (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=738077) variant classes, both quite good. |
