| Torquemada_Do11-25-03, 12:49 AM | Would any of you know how to make a medevil marine using 3.5 D&D rules at 3rd level. I am going for a character who can fight good and be able to run some sercect ops missions. I kinda think ranger/rouge would work. What do you all think? |
| Dmitri11-26-03, 04:24 AM | Marine? Covert ops? Umm...that's a kind of new inovation, actually. A Medieval marine would be a kind of hybrid sailor/soldier (basicly a really fierce sailor), so give him, say, profession (sailor), rope use and swim (assuming you don't want to drown--it'd be more historicly accurate to NOT give him swim, but...nobody wants their character to drown the first time he fails a ballance/tumble/climb/etc check on shipboard). If you want a kind of special forces aspect to him, give him a level of Rouge. |
| Bait the Bard11-26-03, 04:30 AM | A ranger is more of an outdoorsy type, but there are a couple of prestige classes is MotW (namely the King/Queen of the wild) that would make your character a water-orientated character. However, if you wanted a sneaky mission type guy, I would go for a rougr, and try and convince your DM to change some of the skills, such as Decipher script for swim, etc. hope tis helps - the annoying bard |
| InfernoSolarC11-26-03, 10:05 AM | Assuming you are talking more about the Special Forces aspect of a Marine, and not the water aspects, I would suggest going 2 Ranger, 1 Rogue, then Rogue until 3, Then Pure Ranger. Take Human as your first Favored Enemy, Max stealth, Take the other Humanoid types as your later favored enemies. Use TWF and Sneak Attack, plus Favored Enemy Bonuses. Keep Survival maxxed for tracking. Take Craft(Trapmaking) for jungle man-traps and nasty surprises. Swim, Climb, Balance, and Tumble will all be important. I would suggest some of the Ranged Feats and a crossbow to allow you to set up nice ambushes. Then, fight like a soldier. Use tactics, ambushes, and stealth. Never engage an enemy directly. Attack their scouts, trap the bodies, set up an ambush, and wait. Trap their restrooms, or the path to same. Use Track, Gather Info, Bluff, and Sense Motive to determine their movements and habits. And then trap where they go and what they do. Also, don't be afraid to carry wierd gear. Grappeling hooks, breathing tubes, trap kits, flaming oil, and other such stuff is a Special Forces best friend. Finally, if you do want to do the water thing, be a Water Gensai from the FR book. Gives you a swim speed and water breathing. You will be a nightmare amphibious troop. |

| Torquemada_Do11-27-03, 12:19 AM | Thank you all for respond to my build question. I like InfernoSolar's the best though. I loved your suggestions for fighting styles and skills and such, but I don't think I can take humans as my favorite since I'm human. Any more feedback would be great. |
| DakezDarkenblood11-27-03, 07:37 AM | You can in 3.5 ... it made no sense at all for rangers to limit their favored enemy to anyone but their own race. As it was a CG ranger could have taken favored enemy elves, who tend to be chaotic good and not burning forests for cattle grazing land or poaching certain species to extinction.... but not not human, who tend towards neutral and do clear cut/over hunt. |
| Dunelord11-28-03, 01:07 AM | I would guess you would have the swim feat out of Masters of the Wild. And Endurance. I could see you with one level in Barbarian since I have known a lot of Marines with a bad tempter. Rage could help with this. A human would give you the abilty to levels in Ranger so you could get all the bonuses to being out in the wilderness. You might want to take some levels in fighter to pick up the the bonus feats. There is a alternative fighter class in Dragon that makes you better when your on a boat. Some levels in Rog. might help. If your going for something like a modern Marine, you might want to take rapid reload. Also you could take some feats that help when you charge. If your setting lets you, you could take the Exotic Weapon Proficency, and use a flint lock. You might want Hide, M.S, and for sure survial. |
