And just to confirm, he should be attaining 45,000 XP to become a 5th level Barbarian, just like a 9th level PC becoming 10th level ?? |

Therefore he needs the xp from 9th to 10th clvl to become 5th lvl barb |
| Captain_Kobold10-08-07, 10:31 PM | The character will earn Exp, start with Exp, and start with equipment based on its Effective Character Level. (ECL). This is a combination of its Racial hit Dice, its class levels, and its Level Adjustment. It will gain ability score increases and feats based on its Hit dice, which in this case are 9. (5 racial (3 HD +2 from awakening), 4 class levels.) Assuming that this was a 3 HD wolf that was awakened. Its Level adjustment is pretty much whatever the DM has decided is balanced. There are no set rules as yet for LA of awakened animals. Assuming a 3 HD starting wolf as you have said, its LA is probably around +1 to +0. Given that the final character is medium sized, has all the wolf ability bonuses, and capabilities, but is stuck with a number of Animal HD and cannot use any magical weapons or most other items, +0 is not unreasonable. |
| runestar10-08-07, 10:47 PM | Scrap that 3rd lv of animal HD. You get +2HD when the wolf is awakened, and the 5th animal HD is flat out worthless since it does not grant bab or save improvements. 4 racial HD is the perfect cut-off point. Not sure what LA would be, but LA of +1 or even +0 should be okay.:) |
| Shadowfax710-08-07, 11:00 PM | He's considered a clvl 9 character and gets xp accordingly. Therefore he needs the xp from 9th to 10th clvl to become 5th lvl barb OK, that is what I thought. Thus he gets a share of 4,050 XP for a CR 10 encounter and requires 45,000 XP to get to 5th level Barbarian, correct ?? |
