| Sourcemaster212-14-04, 06:46 PM | I've been working on a world for a while now, and am trying to tie up a few loose ends. Specifically, I want to make the setting alternative class-friendly. To do this, I need a basic description (name, nature of abilities, ect.) of the most used non-core classes. Only 3.5 is allowed, so there probably aren't too many, but any help is appreciated. |
| Darion Fenix12-14-04, 07:12 PM | I've got a non-bardic Bard variant (The Scholar) that I'm quite proud of, if that's what you're interested in. I assume you mean you want some home brewed alternates to base classes and a detailed description of them so you can add them to your campaign? Or do you want something like a list of the classes in Unearthed Arcana? |
| Sourcemaster212-14-04, 07:35 PM | Links to homebrewed classes are welcome, but I'd also like official classes. Annoying, I know, but I'd rather not miss any 3.5 classes, especially the commonly taken ones. My campaign focuses quite a bit on class identity, and almost every one has a specific origin, location, ect. I don't want to exclude any of the more important options, so if anyone is up for it, I'm all ears (eyes?) |

| Darion Fenix12-14-04, 08:55 PM | Well, you can't go wrong with the new base classes from the Complete X series. Some of them may seem a little wonky at first but I can promise they're all balanced and very playable. All told these are the alternate base classes allowed in my group. Hexblade, Samurai, Swashbuckler (CW) Warlock, Warmage, Wu Jen (CA) Barbarian Totems, Bardic Sage, Divine Bard, Savage Bard, Cloistered Cleric, Druidic Avenger, Thug (fighter variant), Monk (all fighting styles), Paladins of Freedom, Slaughter and Tyranny, Planar and Urban Rangers, Wilderness Rogue, Battle Sorcerer, Domain Wizards, Wizard Specialist Variants (Unearthed Arcana) And here's my new favorite, the Scholar. The Scholar is identical to the bard unless noted below. Scholars may choose to be proficient with any 2 martial weapons. They gain Ride, Handle Animal and Heal as class skills. Their Reflex save is Poor, Will is Good. They may be of any alignment. Bardic Knowledge is turned to Scholastic Knowledge; the effect is the same. Scholars do not have Bardic Music or any of the associated abilities: countersong, fascinate, inspire courage etc etc... Scholars gain Bonus Feats at 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th level. This feat may be any feat that does not require a prerequisite, any item creation or any metamagic feat. Scholars may choose either Charisma or Intelligence as their spellcasting ability depending on whether they view magic as an art or a science. Scholars may choose their spells from the Sorcerer's list with the exception of spells from the schools of Conjuration, Evocation and Necromancy. In my campaign Scholars are like graduate students with attitude. The prestigious Corenthian Academy of Arts and Sciences accepts students from all over the world. Typically the students are from rich families but the school is famous for sponsoring poor students with exceptional talent. The Academy teaches everything from warfare to magic so Fighters, Bards, Wizards, Sorcerers, Warmages and particularly Scholars are among the Academy's alumni. Like the Bard, Scholars are jacks-of-all-trades and the Academy teaches that versatility is its own strength. They're expected to be able to face anything and use their heads to get out of it alive. Rather than rely on martial or arcane prowess, the Scholar is expected to use his talents with spells and swords to bolster his abilities. Scholars are the backbone of the Academy. After graduation they're typically dispatched on missions to retrieve important magical items or explore unknown regions. Regardless of their mission they are expected to make maps, sketch unusual creatures, collect arcane lore and otherwise bring back as much information to the Academy as possible. The mark of a Scholar is their signature long blue coat. On the left shoulder is a decorative pauldron bearing the symbol of the Academy. Typically Scholars have their coats lined with leather, metal studs of even chain mail. (Just treat the coat as light armor of the appropriate type with an additional 5 gold added to the cost for the trouble of sewing the armor in place) Hope this helps. It may be a little scattered because I've been distracted while typing it up, so I'll be happy to answer any questions have you or expand upon something you'd like to know more about. |

I'd seen the sticky, but thought it was all for homebrew. Thanks, Shadowfoot. Since I've got the classes down-and where they can be found-any tips on well balanced/interesting ones? Something with original flavor is preferred, rather than yet another variation of the standard classes. |
