Would a heel check keep my animal campanion (wolf) at my side when I board a boat or ship? My dm says I need the come trick trained.

Both should be fine. Either let the dog stay at the pier, then call him as soon as you are on the boat (Come).

Or you just let him follow you while you are boarding the ship (Heel).

In both cases I would reconsider playing in a group, where arguing about such trivial scenes is common.;)
