Can a Drunken Master take Monk levels again? [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-20-05, 01:38 PM There is a question that once a monk has gone off his path (drunken Master) and decides to return to his Monk hood that he cannot do so. Any info on this? Isn't this a roleplaying situation?

01-20-05, 01:52 PM Look very closely at the wording for the PrC as compared to other monk PrCs. I don't have the book (Complete Warrior?) but the monk PrCs that allow intermixing Monk levels or returning to Monk will specifically say so. That's as far as you can get with a ruling based on the published rules. Beyond that, you could ask for a DM ruling. Beyond that, there's the Monastic Training feat. The other question is, are you playing the drunken master as an actual alcoholic? If so, he'd probably have to quit drinking or cut back to social drinking in order to start taking straight Monk levels again, and you'd need to make sure it made sense for all drunken master abilities to stay in effect at that point.

01-20-05, 07:53 PM Actually, I am the DM. I don't mind if he wants to go back, but I told him it has to within the context of his character, in other words, roleplaying. Actually, things for his character will get very stressful in a few more sessions. It would fun to see what direction he goes.

01-21-05, 04:02 AM From what I see as just posted, it seems that Drunken Master does specifically state that you can return to Monk, as with any character action it certainly would have to make sense roleplaying-wise; the Drunken Master's lifestyle (depending on how literally you take the drunken part) might have to change pretty drastically.

If you're still interested, the Monastic Training feat does specifically and only (as far as I know) that: It lets you go back to monk, if you couldn't before. I have no idea and would not hazard a guess as to its appropriateness in a given setting, but I believe it is a Forgotten Realms feat, and could just as easily be wrong.
