msavage 02-01-07, 09:24 PM	Just a newbie question. I have a human character hence favoured class is the highest class. But it does not state highest base class it states only highest class. Prestige Classes do not contribute to multiclass experience penalties. But if the highest class is a prestige class for a human does that mean his favoured class is the prestige class or are prestige classes ignored before deciding favoured class, meaning his favoured class is his highest base class. For part of the build the human will have two base classes and a prestige class where the prestige class will be highest and the base classes will differ by more than one level. During this time will he suffer an experience penaly for multiclassing? Thanks for any help anyone can provide on this.

Treantmonklvl20 02-01-07, 09:31 PM	I doubt highly that PrC's are intended to be potential favored classes since, as you mentioned, they do not incur experience penalties.
angelus_truelove 02-01-07, 10:19 PM	Since prestige classes do not count towards the experience penalty, and the favored class of a race allows it to ignore a particular class (human = any/highest) when regarding experience penalties, it only makes sense to assume that prestige classes would not count as a human's highest class, and that only base classes would count.

During this time will he suffer an experience penaly for multiclassing? No, he would not. Suppose I have a human fighter 1/sorceror 6/eldritch knight 7. I ignore the levels of Eldritch Knight, and as the highest class (ignoring the PrC), I also disregard the six levels of Sorceror. This leaves a single level of Fighter, which doesn't incur any experience point penalties for multiclassing. By the way, this is one of the reasons that Humans are my favorite race to play: the ability to create interesting mixtures of classes without being penalised for it.
belthazzar1113 02-02-07, 04:02 AM	an easy way to think about this is that favored class represents a racial tendancy to dip a certain class. if your race has favored class barbarian then the race as a whole includes many menbers that will have a level or two of barbarian. meaning they have rage and possibly fast movment, not as a race ability, but a good number of them dip a level of that class. if your favored class is wizard then expect to see members of that race with access to cantrips and sheild and mage armor and a host of little level 1 wands to poester you with. not every member of that race dips wizard but many do without ill effect on their advancment. really its just racial tendancy, saying that you ahve a racial affinity for being a master warrior is a little off, or saying you have a racial affinity for a dwarven defender is not meaningful, those are advanced clases that a select few ever reach, not something that the race as a whole picks up a level or two in. besides that RP explaination having a favored class be a PrC wouldn't add any mechanical benifit to a character, effectivly all PrCs are favored classes for all characters since PrCs don't wcount for class level penelties.
