I have a elf Rogue that wants to buy a scroll. The question is can he read it?

pg49 of the Players Guide say they can use a scrolls, wants, or magic items.

But on page 51 they have an example of a Rogue buying "Use Magical Device" skill.

So can't anyone just buy that skill? Why do they need to buy it if they can already just read a scroll?

Uh, page 46 of the PHB is the first page of the Ranger class...

But looking at the Rogue section, I see nothing where it states they can automatically cast spells from scrolls, he'll need Use Magic Device for that as normal.

Sorry about that bad page. good eyes Veton!!!

PG 49 at the end of Charicteristics:
".... rogues can fake it well enough ro cast spells form scrolls, activate Wands, and use just about any magic item."

If they need "Use Magical Device" skill, why did they say they can use scrolls? So can't anyone then read scrolls with that skill?
Please explain

I think it is mainly because Rogues are one of the very few classes that have Use Magic Device as a class skill.

Of course, I don't have the 3.5 books yet, so I am not 100% sure about what you are discussing.

This is the big part of my confusion, is where doesn't it say that only certain classes can use "Use Magical Device"

So a Fighter can buy "Use Magical Device" and use scrolls? If so then why does it specifically say that Rogues can use scrolls?

It's a holdover from 3.0 when UMD was an exclusive skill. Now anyone can buy it (though it's cross-class for most) so that is simply old flavor text that never got changed. Anyone who wants to use a scroll of a spell that's not on their list must use UMD to do so--even rogues.

Yes Krelios,

I just found that out, anyone can use a scroll if they buy the skill. the wording of the rules messed me up.
