| MentatHF06-10-07, 12:52 PM | Hi, first time posting so be patient. Im wondering if a warmage can use wands? i notice in the "warmage character sheet" there is a place for wands. and if they can't use wands would they be able to take a SKILL or FEAT that would allow them too? Thanks Mentat I must not fear, fear is the mind killer. |
| Jaxgaret06-10-07, 12:54 PM | They can use a Wand of any spell that is on their spell list, or make a UMD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/useMagicDevice.htm) check to use any Wand of a spell that is not on their spell list. |
| MentatHF06-10-07, 01:23 PM | Thanks for the fast reply. |
| Fred06-10-07, 04:09 PM | Don't forget that a Warmage can learn any Evocation spell and can therefore use any Evocation wand. They can use a Wand of any spell that is on their spell list, or make a UMD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/useMagicDevice.htm) check to use any Wand of a spell that is not on their spell list. |
| glacialcat06-10-07, 04:57 PM | Don't forget that a Warmage can learn any Evocation spell and can therefore use any Evocation wand. No they can't. There's plenty of Evocation spells that a Warmage doesn't have on his spell list. Just because they can put it on their spell list with Advanced Learning, does not mean that they can use any wand with an evocation spell in it. It has to actually be on his spell list for him to cast it, and until the spell is actually added with Advanced Learning, it is not on his spell list. |
| MentatHF06-11-07, 03:30 PM | Wow so im really wondering at this point if he can use a wand at all? hes more like a Sorcerer isnt he? Sorcerers cant use wands but Wizards can? i dont see anyinfo in the book about him being able to use but there is a place for wands on teh Warmage character sheet thanks again Mentat |
| verthal06-11-07, 03:37 PM | Wizards and sorcerers can both use wands. As can Warmages. The Warmage, like the bard, can only use a wand with a spell that shows up on his spell list. Just because they have the potential to learn new spells from a larger list does not mean they have the ability to use any wand from a 'potential' list of spells. Once a warmage picks up a new spell with the advanced learning, he can also use wands that hold that spell because that spell NOW appears on his complete spell list. |
| Tempest Stormwind06-11-07, 03:47 PM | Wands use Spell Trigger activation methods. If the warmage in question has the wand's spell on his spell list, he can use the wand without making any form of check. This includes any spell on the warmage spell list or any spell he's learned through Extra Spell or Advanced Learning. If the warmage in question does not have the wand's spell on his spell list, he can't use the wand normally, though he might still be able to trigger it with Use Magic Device (exactly the same as a non-caster using the wand). This same rule applies to sorcerers, who can use wands of any sor/wiz spell even if they don't know it themselves (that is, the spell is on their spell list, as noted above). As a rule of thumb, ignore the character sheet slots and pay attention to the activation types or item prerequisites. |
| risner06-11-07, 06:26 PM | Don't forget that a Warmage can learn any Evocation spell and can therefore use any Evocation wand. Only after they use Advanced Learning to learn the specific spell. The class feature does not allow them to use wands without UMD for any spell they could learn via Advanced Learning, but have not yet learned. |
| OneWinged4ngel06-11-07, 06:28 PM | Can a warmage use wands? Yes. |
| MentatHF06-11-07, 07:08 PM | Could someone please tell me what page/book i can find the info on Warmages usings wands. thanks! Mentat |
| KurenaiYami06-11-07, 07:17 PM | Dungeon Master's Guide, page 245 for using wands, though all it really tells you is that it is a Spell Trigger activated item. The information about Spell Trigger activated items is in the same book on page 213. |
| OneWinged4ngel06-11-07, 07:18 PM | Could someone please tell me what page/book i can find the info on Warmages usings wands. thanks! Mentat In the DMG, where it says who can use wands. Don't have a page number... I don't use my DMG much since I prefer the SRD. |
| risner06-11-07, 07:21 PM | Could someone please tell me what page/book i can find the info on Warmages usings wands. thanks! Mentat Since you are rejecting the concept, you will not be able to find more help here. You will not find a passage that says "Warmages can use wands" in any rule book. You also will not find any passage that says any class may use any wand. |
| Salla06-11-07, 07:26 PM | In the DMG, where it says who can use wands. Don't have a page number... I don't use my DMG much since I prefer the SRD. Here you go, then, from the section in the SRD on spell-trigger activations: Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell. (This is the case even for a character who can’t actually cast spells, such as a 3rd-level paladin.) The user must still determine what spell is stored in the item before she can activate it. Activating a spell trigger item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity. So, if the spell is on the Warmage's spell list, he can use a wand of that spell. |
| Tempest Stormwind06-11-07, 08:23 PM | Didn't I just go over all that...? |
| Salla06-11-07, 08:27 PM | Didn't I just go over all that...? Yeah, but I misread OneWinged4Angel's post as a request for an SRD reference. :) |
