I might take a Dire Bear and make it 1 or 2 levels of Druid more to get a Dire Polar Bear.

04-19-05, 05:54 AM A CR 4 or 5 animal is usually a (level -9) animal companion.
A CR 6 or 7 is a (level -12) animal companion.
A CR 8 or 9 is a (level -15) animal companion.

Following this trend, the dire polar bear from Frostburn (a CR 11 creature) would be a suitable companion for a druid of 19th level or higher (level -18).
