I'm new to the game and I'm wondering if I can create my own classes so whenever me and my friends play, we won't just have cleric, fighter, wizard, rogue, monk, and barbarian.

No. Of course not.

Really? I thought the game was flexible enough to allow us.

You wish it was. If you mess with the system, Invidables will decend from Wizard's Mechanus headquarters and sue you.

....sorry.... sorry...

You can create classes at your leisure. Post them on the forums to have people help you with balance and whatnot.

Oh, thanks. :)
I'm pretty new to D&D, so I'm not sure of a lot of things yet.

An if you are worried about them being balanced or not if have of the osters think it is too weak and the other half think ir's too strong it's balanced (a piece of advice i read somewhere)

Also, as a general "I need more core class options," the Complete series has three new core classes apiece within them.

Melpomene so eeevil

If you are new to the game tho, I'd advise playing a game with just the core material first. Jumping feet first into class creation might cause you to miss something.

You're probably right...

But some of my friends are rather picky, so I'll have to find someway to suit all their needs so everyone has a good time and doesn't have to be stuck with a "normal" class.

if you are wanting to make your campiagns more interesting by having more than just the same classes being played over and over again then you should explore some of the prestige classes in some of the other books, the class guide books are a good resource.
i like prestige classes vs. making my own because you dont have to go through the revision process and trouble thinking them up.
there are literally hundreds of prestige classes out there, you will usually find something that suits your tastes, try the souleater from BoVD :D prestige classes are an easy way to add a unique feel to your personal character
again like like them simple because of the time factor.

stuch with "normal" classes?

I think one of my favroite aspects of the game is takeing a prestablished class and bending it to suite my will. The vague classes are my favorite, it allows me to mix mach flavor and become whatever I want.
Extra classes aren't really needed, and fairly difficult without looking like just a mess of odd ablties. IME what works better is taking an older class and changeing it to become what I want.
Even if it means replaceing a few ablties or alterations to the spell list.

Since you're new, and looking for options, I'll give you some advice.
If you're looking for any option, the boards are a fantastic place to look. However, not all classes are balanced - look at the text others have written and decide for yourself.

If you're looking for options, you may not have to do all the design work yourself. There is a chance that someone here has captured what you want - that will save you time. I recommend some of the following -

Szatany has redone all of the core classes. If you're looking for slight modifications, look him up.
Shadowfoot has a slew of base classes, and PrC's - I'd recommend giving him a look.
Heretic888 made a really cool ninja class I like to use. Those are off the top of my head, and they're all free. Feel free to dig up more.

If you want, there are some books done by WoTC that will almost certainly be of aid. All of the "Complete" books (Complete Warrior, Complete Divine...) have new base classes, feats, and items for you. Unearthed Arcana has many varients and new rules to choose from. Those are some options if you're willing to spend. I don't really recommend most 3rd party products if you're new, because the balance may be a little wonky.

It is possible to create your own classes, but a good working knowledge of the rules is recommened.
