mists_cloud 04-16-07, 09:22 PM	lol, you can, as long as it's a wizard then you can, because the elf's favoured class(he takes no XP penalty) is wizard, so you could be a Ranger 10/ Wizard 1 and take no penalty.

That's what determines how good rangers are at their limited spellcasting (it's still less important for them than, say, strenght, dex or con, though) If you have a wisdom of 11 or more, you'll be able to cast spells from level 4 or 6 on. That also means that you can eventually use wands of spells from that list, and scrolls of spells that are on your list and that you are high level enough to cast. So wands of cure light wounds, for example, are an option. Additionnaly, if you have at least 11 int, you could multiclass as a wizard with no penalties, because elves have wizard as their favored class. This would give you access to a handful of lvl 0 and lvl 1 wizard spells (with crappy durations or effects, because of the low caster level. Some feats in some books could help with this). I would really, really not recommend taking the wizard level though. It's bundled with a low HD and really doesn't give you much. Well, unless you have some good plan involving arcane wands. Finally, some magic items don't require you to be a wizard or other spellcaster. Usualy, they cost more for it though.
